Disadvantages: No flavour in meal, expensive, uncooked food

A friend and I were in Lincoln for the weekend and on Saturday night headed to the Bailgate area of the city to find somewhere to eat. We hadn't booked and the first restaurant that we tried was too busy. We spotted Thailand No 1 and the prices seemed reasonable and so we headed in.

The restaurant was extremely busy when we entered but staff said that despite not having booked they could seat us, as along as we could vacate the table by 8.15pm which seemed reasonable to us. We were seated in the main restaurant section near the entrance to the kitchen. The overall look and impression of the restaurant was excellent. The staff all had matching uniforms and looked very smart. The restaurant was buzzing and so it appeared that it must be a popular choice in Lincoln.

We ordered the chicken skewers with satay sauce for starters to share. When it arrived, the chicken wasn't cooked properly and so we sent it back to the kitchen despite the waitress insisting that it was cooked. We were brought a new starter at the same time as our main meal and so it ended up just being a side dish rather than a starter.

For the main meal, I ordered the chicken with peppers, onions and garlic, and my friend ordered the prawns in a spicy chilli sauce. Both smelt delicious when they were brought out and were well presented. However, that is as good as it got. My dish lacked any flavour and you could tell it had just been cooked but not for long enough to allow the flavour to seep in. The mushrooms were still part raw. My friend's dish fared slightly better although she too said that you could taste the 'heat' of the spice but no real flavour. The portions themselves were not very big either.

It seemed that staff were in a hurry to get us out of the restaurant and reclaim the table. They even started wiping the table down before we had left. I therefore think that our order was rushed through the kitchen to ensure that we would have time to eat. In the end we left over 30minutes before we needed to.

The cost of the meal came to £17 each (including a soft drink and rice). This does not sound like a lot, but for a shared starter and a poor main course, we both felt that it was overpriced. In fact, we couldn't wait to leave the place and ended up buying more food to eat later that night.

I would not recommend this restaurant at all. You can eat at a much cheaper cost in central London at a weekend and have a relaxing and full of flavour meal. We were disappointed.

I would have given Thailand No 1 a rating of no stars but dooyoo wouldn't accept this. So, 1 star it is!

Summary: Not recommended.
