... The other person at our table to received a below par effort on the part of the chef was the managing director she too polite to complain spent the remainder of the dining experience picking around the uncooked parts of flesh before finally admitting defeat. As food in this state could be very harmful to women at both 20 and 30 weeks gestation we decided to send back the meals, the waiter assured us that this would be rectified and new meals brought to us promptly. The two replacement meals arrived shortly after every...more

The 39 Steps Restaurant (Styal, Cheshire): The worst christmas lunch i ever had......... (490 words)

We decided to have our Christmas party this year at the 39 steps as it was a local well established restaurant; however what ensued was nothing short of appalling. I was 1 of 2 pregnant women attending the Christmas doo and enticed by the prospect of traditional Christmas fair as opposed to the usual Chinese or Italian restaurants i had built up this meal in my mind for quite some time. It wasn't until we sat down for our lunch that I realised something was amis, my bronzed turkey which promised nothing but succulence was raw, not great considering my pregnant state, thankfully I had not tucked into my meal a fate which my pregnant colleague did be fall which ...  Read the complete review

39 Steps - definitely not to be recommended! (473 words)

I was invited to the 39 steps for our office christmas party and on hearing it achieved the accolade of Cheshire restaurant of the year 07-08 was very excited at the prospect of dining there. The starter of Lake trout and potted shrimp was adequate and we all eagerly awaited the arrival of our main courses. My main was Turkey with all the trimmings and on arrival was a well arranged plate, so you can imagine my disappointment when on cutting into my sizeable breast of Turkey that it was completey raw in the middle (I mean meat on the slab raw), (quite frightening when you are 30 weeks pregnant). On complaining to the waiter my meal was ...  Read the complete review

Express Review on The 39 Steps Restaurant (Styal, Cheshire)

Our company Christmas lunch was held at the 39-Steps, and on reflection this is a mistake that will not be repeated.
The Christmas Turkey was completely raw in the middle on 3 of the meals and burnt when re-heated. One of the desserts was also burnt.

I would not return to this restaurant especially as the owner seems to be uninterested regarding the complaints about the quality of the food.

The 39 Steps ~The name – why the 39 Steps?’ In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 thriller the ‘Thirty Nine Steps’ was a secret and deadly espionage organisation and the hero, Richard Hannay, spent a lot of time running around trying to solve mysteries and kissing strange ladies in trains. So what’s the connection to the restaurant by the same name? Does the owner have the top joint missing from one of his fingers? Do the waiters poison your soup or chase you round the car park? Simple answer – I honestly haven’t got a clue. Apparently it’s the second restaurant to carry this name – the other is or was (I can’t get a clear picture on that) in the ...  Read the complete review
