A classic English pub with delicious fayre and splendid surroundings

      The Blackwell Ox.

Something of a legendary eating venue amongst those in the know. If you haven't been before I can assure you that after having been, you will certainly return.

I love classic English pubs. The problem I have is that you generally have to travel a fair distance to find one that provides food, drink and atmosphere to a good standard. I have happened upon many nice looking pubs only to be left empty by the experience, coming away disappointed and fearing the death of that very British idea, a classic English or British pub. How many times do I have to suffer frozen chips and peas with a cardboard steak?

The Blackwell Ox scores on many counts. It delivers a strong and varied Traditional menu. HOWEVER here is the gem - it's main offering is Thai food, yes Thai food! The menu is so extensive you could go there a hundred times and more without having the same meal twice. Chicken, seafood, duck, beef, pork, noodles etc etc. These meals come in different heat grades, these being one, two or three chilli meals. Three being the hottest. There are also some lovely and diverse starters and desserts...

My current favourite dish is crispy duck with green & red peppers with potato and boiled rice. A bowl of Thai style prawn crackers is also a necessity.

There are a team of resident Thai chefs delivering entirely genuine and tasty Thai food to a phenomonal standard. Whether you are new to Thai food, are a fan or have been disappointed in the past, I would recommend trying this place. All will enjoy.

The building itself is large and spread out with a large centre piece square bar. Off each side of the bar are rooms and tables, offering variation and privacy. Lighting is dimmed to a comfortable brightness, meaning you feel at home and comfortable straightaway. There are large open fires which add to the relaxing atmosphere. Staff are always polite, helpful and friendly. And remarkably good looking... It always helps!:)

I am also very fond of a good pint of ale. Black Sheep and Worthingtons are standard here... yes really. They also accommodate two different guest ales every week so that you can try something different. The normal real ales, beers, lagers, wine, whiskeys, non-alcoholic options and even mulled wine and freshly squeezed orange juice are on offer.

Services. Reservations can be made if required. I have been with a group as large as 20 and they accommodated us without issue. A huge car park sits behind the building. A site for caravans belongs to the owner and is licensed for static and touring caravans. The static caravans are for rent or sale. Facilities include: Launderette, dish washing facilities, water and emptying points, toilet and shower facilities and large children's adventure play area. The adventure playground is accessible to all customers and includes a huge treehouse with decked balcony, housing picnic tables and chairs.

The area. The Blackwell Ox is situated amidst Yorkshires most beautiful countryside and is surrounded by the popular Cleveland Hills in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Also nearby is the wonderful coastline and picturesque fishing villages of Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and port of Whitby.

One of my favourite eating places, I have never been disappointed.

Give it a try and enjoy. (you will)
