The Marketplace Restaurant Bar is located inside the Chelsea Farmers Market area, a quiet oasis off Sydney Street, away from the noise and bustle of London's Kings Road.
I met my daughter for lunch, and we aimed for somewhere as close to her office as we could find. The Marketplace Restaurant Bar suited our purpose perfectly. It was a short walk away, and it was off the beaten track and quiet. There is seating inside the restaurant, but we chose to sit outside. The seating outside is at picnic style all-in-one bench and table affairs that you would normally find in pub gardens. It was functional, but not particularly stylish or comfortable.
When we arrived only one other table was occupied, but during the course of our meal the place filled up with diverse people. From a celebrating couple to an "out to lunch from work" group and several mothers with toddlers in pushchairs, it appeared to be a popular stop for locals.
A waiter (or could he have been the head waiter or even owner) met us enthusiastically and offered us a choice of tables. We chose one near to the entry path, and sat down. The menu was quite short, but interesting, and included a couple of salads. This is listed as a Mediterranean restaurant. The day's specials were on a blackboard and included tomato soup, baby spinach salad, chickenburger with bacon and cheese, and apple and blackberry pie.
We both chose the beefburger, and when it arrived we were impressed by the quantity of food on our plates as well as the fact that it was obviously freshly prepared and quite delicious. My daughter had a smoothie with her meal, and I chose a soft drink. Looking at other tables, everyone appeared happy with their food, and the day's special selections also looked good.
The service throughout was excellent, and we finished with coffee and ice cream. The total bill was £38.40 and included a hefty service charge.
Despite the service charge, I did put down a small cash tip for the waiters, just in case the service charge didn't actually end up in their pockets, and because the service had been so good. The strange thing was that as soon as I paid the bill, we ceased to exist, and the waiters seemed to not see us at all. There were no goodbyes, no eye contact or smile, or even a small acknowledgement of our existence, as we left. We may as well have been invisible.
