“ Holly Farm Ormskirk Old Road, Bickerstaffe, Ormskirk, L39 0HD „
The Sandpiper is a traditional rural pub, perfectly located just off the M58 in Bickerstaffe, near Ormskirk (Lancashire). It is a large pub with a generous sized beer garden, perfect for summer drinks and eats which is another reason that its location is so good, it is the perfect place to stop off on a motorway journey for a break.
It is currently run by the "Vintage Inns" chain but doesn't have the feel of a chain when you are inside (it was only when I went to another local Vintage Inns that I realised it was part of a chain, due to the cute little ladybird illustrations scattered over the menu!)
The menu is very extensive and covers the most traditional country fayre through to some more gourmet offerings.
The quality of the food here amazed me, which came as a bigger shock once I had realised that it was a chain. In the month that I first visited the Sandpiper with my aunty, we returned twice more and I went to the other local Vintage Inn twice with my boyfriend too! So as you can tell I have a wealth of experience with the menu and can recommend some of my favourites!
The starter of garlic mushrooms (crispy mushrooms) are the familiar breaded variety, which is good for fans of the retro starter as many pubs and restaurants only serve creamy garlic mushrooms now! The portion was huge and rather than calling them garlic mushrooms, they looked more like Turkey Dinosaurs (large turkey nuggets in dinosaur shapes by Bernand Matthews) the mushrooms come served with a garlic mayo dip for a reasonable/bargain price of £3.95. I have tried a fair few of the starters but can't think of which ones, and looking at the menu on their website, I can tell that the menu has changed seasonally since I last went. Current starters include "Goats cheese with a Dhukka crunchy coating" and "Roasted flat mushrooms" which both sound mouthwatering. All starters cost less than £5.25 which I think is very reasonable.
Onto the mains....
I once had a gorgeous Mediterranean lamb shank which was served with roasted feta and roast veg which was delicious. The pub classics on offer include the usual Fish and Chips, Gammon and Steaks. The more unusual pub choices currently include, "Roasted butternut squash and aubergine moussaka" and "Five spice duck leg confit" which are both making me very hungry right now. Again the prices of the mains are pretty reasonable for fresh and generous portions they range from £6.95 (fishcakes) to £16.25 (Fillet steak Rossini) most choices sit around the £10 or less mark.
Deserts cost about £4 and there is a large and changing selection, if you have any room left after the mains!
You order your food at the bar, where I have always been served by lovely staff who then give you your pot of cutlery and a wooden spoon with your table number on it. There is a large selection of drinks including some real ales and in the summer there is always a good selection of non alcoholic punches and cocktails my favourite last summer being an "elderflower fizz"
The pub serves lunch and dinner as well as a gorgeous sunday roast.
If you are in the area I recommend that you pay a visit and I hope you enjoy your meal as much as the (many) ones I have.
You can see the full menu and directions on the website, where you can also sign up for email offers.
