The Slug and Lettuce (Nottingham)
Advantages: Nice decor, good customer service, great quality food and drink, great offers
Disadvantages: Drinks can be a little pricey.
Nottingham did used to have two Slug and Lettuce bars but one closed a couple of years ago leaving just one located in the Cornerhouse building. This is an entertainment complex housing a large multi-screen cinema and various bars and restaurants. Slug and Lettuce is located on the side of the building which has a slight café culture feel with outdoor seating.
The bar itself is quite large with a contemporary feel and has level access so is suitable for wheelchair users. When you first enter the bar there is a variety of high bar style tables and stools, settee's and tables set with comfy chairs. As stated there is also some outdoor seating but this is restricted to about 6 tables so on a nice day they do get taken quickly. As you head to the back of the bar you will reach a more formal dining area set with tables and chairs designed for dining, to sit in this area you will normally have to wait at a point to be seated. Toilets are located upstairs and be warned there are two flights so anyone who has walking difficulties may want to use the disabled toilet facilities which are located at the back of the dining area and can be opened by a member of staff or with a RADAR key. There are also baby changing facilities located within the disabled toilet.
The actual bar runs along the left hand wall and is quite large. You can head straight to the bar to be served drinks or if it is during the daytime staff will be happy to provide table service with you receiving your bill before you leave.
I visit this Slug and Lettuce on a fairly frequent basis as they tend to do quite a few special offers:
- Sunday - Kids eat for a Quid
- Monday - 50% off all food
- Tuesday - 2 for 1 curries
- Wednesday - Wine Down Wednesday, Any bottle of wine for £10.95
Also if you register on the website you will receive other special offers which can consist of money off food promotions, special event menus eg mothers or fathers day and drink promotions.
I have eaten at this Slug and Lettuce many times and usually on a Monday when the 50% off food promotion is running as I find the food to be quite reasonably priced anyway so the offer makes it somewhat of a bargain. The main menu has a good choice and consists of a selection of starters or sharing plates, salads, pasta dishes, classic meals, burgers, curries and sandwiches, wraps and panini's. There is also a variety of vegetarian options and a desserts menu with all desserts being buy one get one free daily. If you are an early bird there is even a breakfast menu where you can indulge in a full English or a bit of toast. I have tried a range of items on the menu and have never had anything to complain about, all of the meals I have eaten have been of good quality, fresh and served piping hot and in a fast time.
As far as drinks are concerned there is an extensive men, with a selection of draft and bottled lagers and cider as well as a large wine and cocktail list. I do find the drinks a little on the expensive side so again it is best to visit when there are promotions running. On Monday to Thursday cocktails are buy one get one free after 5pm and not forgetting the wine promotion on a Wednesday. The cocktails are very nice indeed with all being made fresh to order and staff all seemed to be well trained in cocktail making using all the special equipment. For anyone not partaking in a alcoholic beverage then there is a selection of soft drinks, mocktails and hot beverages.
I have always found the staff to be very attentive and pleasant but without being overbearing. I cannot recall any time when I have had to wait an extensive length of time for drinks or to order more items. There have been a couple of times that it has been very busy with a queue of people waiting to be seated to eat but have found that staff do try and lay tables quickly after someone has left and keep people informed of waiting times. The bar can become very busy at night as it is in a prime location in the city centre so especially on a Friday and Saturday night you may find yourself waiting a little longer for drinks but this is the same for most popular bars.
Overall I have always been very impressed with Slug and Lettuce in Nottingham, it is a modern bar which serves good quality food at reasonable prices I have always experienced very good customer service and feel that although the drinks can be a little on the expensive side it is worth it for a nice experience.
