      Very helpful

A lovely little cafe with some of the best hot chocolate I've ever had

One of the first things we did on our recent visit to Dublin was to go on an open top bus tour. Near the end of the tour, we passed an attractive little cafe overlooking the River Liffey, near O'Connell Street. It was called The Sweetest Thing, and looked to be a chocolate cafe. We decided we would have to pay a visit at some point...

We walked along to The Sweetest Thing mid-morning the next day, and found we were the only customers at that time. Perhaps others waited until later in the day before getting their first chocolate fix.

The menu was nothing short of mouthwatering. Different varieties of hot chocolate and milkshakes, plus of course the counter display of chocolates and cakes. Tempted though I was by a milkshake, I went for a Cadbury's hot chocolate, as did my partner's mother, while he decided he needed coffee more than chocolate, and had a latte. I decided not to have any chocolate to eat with my drink, as having ordered hot chocolate and a chocolate muffin at the same time in the past, I've realised there is such a thing as a chocolate overload.

The Sweetest Thing is very small, and we took a seat at what I think might have been the only table inside, or at least one of a couple - there were stools along the window though. There are also tables outside. Our drinks were brought over quite quickly, and I could tell by sight that the hot chocolate was going to be good - it was a nice rich colour, and there was dark section at the bottom. I was about to stir that up when I realised that it was the chocolate syrup I'd seen being poured in, and to leave it til the end would be a good idea.

The hot chocolate turned out to be absolutely delicious, possibly among the best I've ever had. It was rich and smooth but not sickly, a nice thick texture and wonderfully chocolatey. The syrup was good, like a rich shot of chocolate to finish the drink off.

The cafe itself was a really pleasant place to sit. It was quite purple/burgundy, and also seemed to be Cadbury-themed. There were display cabinets with old and recent Cadbury merchandise in them, and photos on the wall of Dublin in the past. The Sweetest Thing had a counter display of individual chocolates, and it also sold Cadbury bars (which we bought some of) and things like chocolate fondue sets.

The Sweetest Thing was definitely sweet, and worth a visit if you're in Dublin and in need of a morning or afternoon break...or just want a chocolate hit.
