Advantages: Range of meats & vegatables
Disadvantages: Limited potato options
The Topby Carvery is a chain of pubs across the country which, as the name suggests, revolves around a carvery service, although there are other meals options available for you.
The lunch menu, which costs £5 is served from opening time until 7:00pm Monday - Saturday & consists of:-
* British or Irish Beef
* Honey & Mustard Glazed Gammon
* British Turkey
You can have 1, 2 or all 3 of these meats on your plate as well as a Yorkshire Pudding. Once the server has added your choices to your plate you can help yourself to as many as the potato & vegatable options as you like. There are a number of gravy & sauce options you can add as well. You can, if you wish, return to the carvery & add more vegatables, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, sauce (but not meat) if you're still feeling peckish.
The vegatable options will vary between visits. So, if for example, you find parsnips & leak amongst the vegatables on your initial visit this does not mean that they will be available on all subsequent visits.
From 7:00pm onwards an evening menu is served & the cost of the meal rises from £5.00 to £7.50. Extra dishes are added to the menu & each night has a "theme".
+ Monday is BBQ Chicken Night
+ Tuesday is Oriental Night
+ Wednesday & Thursday are Curry Nights
+ Friday Classic is Beef Night
+ Saturday Classic is Lamb Night
On Sunday's the carvery is priced at £7.50 for the whole of the day & Roast Pork with crispy crackling is added to the options available.
As I said earlier, there are other main meal options available as well as a number of starters & desserts (I can recommend the raspberry & white chocolate pavlova). Full details can be found on the chain's website:-
www.toby-carvery.co.uk
which also offers you an option to locate the nearest Toby Carvery to you.
We generally eat at the carvery once a month, taking Grandma (she's 97) & thoroughly enjoy the meal. Sunday's can get very busy & you may often have to queue for a table (you can only reserve one if there are more than 6 of you) so we generally go around 3:00pm on a Saturday when it's much quieter.
The only minor point is the limited potato options available which usually consist of some sort of roast potato & some sort of new / boiled potatoes. We once had mashed potato as an option, but I've never seen chips available there.
All in all, great value food where you control how much of it you add to your plate. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
Summary: Recommended for a good meal

- 01/06/09 Me too. Not the sort of place you'd want to go to regularly if you were on a diet as the temptation to pile your plate up would be too much!!!
But, at £5 for a huge plateful of food you really can't go wrong, especially when you compare it to how much you'd pay for pizza, Southern Fried Chicken, McDonalds, Chinese or Indian Takeaway etc |
