Advantages: Fast efficient service, food well prepared and of a high standard
Disadvantages: None - but may find varying service and food standards elsewhere
Like all other restaurant chains Toby Carverys face the same problem, some are extrememly good and others are absolutely dreadful.
My partner visited one in Coventry (Binley Inn) only a month or so before she moved down to Plymouth (August 2008), and our last flat was literally less than 1/4 mile from the Toby Carvery at the George Junction in Plymouth. In fact she persuaded me to visit and I was extremely impressed with the service and most of the carvery food available. Desserts were also delicious and worth the extra.
My only critisism is that they could do with a larger selection of meals and desserts. I know they are a carvery, but when you're taking a family with you a bit of choice would be appreciated.
After Harvester, I would recommend this as a serious contender for a family meal. Everyone enjoys a roast now and then, and their pricing is very reasonable.
I did say they can be dreadful, and I have never had any problems with the one in Plymouth, but at Christmas I went back to the one in Coventry with my partner and it was dreadful. The food was cold, turkey was dry and to cap it all the chef had had a falling out with management and walked out that morning. Still the dessert was worth waiting for. My rating is purely for Plymouth - I'm afraid you'll have to visit your local and find out for yourself what it's like.
I have been asked by some why I didn't include a price originally in my review - I didn't foget, it was deliberate as it depends on the area where you live, but for completeness, at the Plymouth one it's currently £6.50 before 7pm - and includes a basic starter/dessert or £1 off, after 7pm it's £7.50, but the range of food available is slightly better.
Summary: Great food at a realistic price
