I love traditional English food, and Sunday lunch has got to be one of my favourites, although as much as I like it, I don't cook them too often so when my other half suggests that we should go out for Sunday lunch, I get excited and my mouth starts to water. He isn't a lover of Sunday lunch and doesn't necessarily have a roast however when you go to a Toby Carvery, thats the only thing that you are getting.
There are several Toby carveries in Stoke on Trent, some better than other, not in terms of quality of food but also the surroundings and environment that you are in. The nicest Toby restaurant is the one that is closest to my home and it has a really nice drinking area too.
When you arrive at a Toby you are greeted in the same way, you wait to be taken to you seat, once seated the waiter / waitress will take you drinks order and when your drinks arrive she will brief you on the carvery and that you can have as much vegetables that you want.
The carvery is self service apart from the meat in which you normally have a choice of Beef, Gammon and Turkey, you can choose one or half a little of all three. There is not much choice for vegetarians and normally just one dish available. They also have one alternative to the carvery and on most occasions when I have been ot has been Moriccan Lamb. YOu are also asked when you are served with the meat whether you want Yorkshire pudding, which are normally huge and take up most of the room on your plate leaving not much space left for vegetables, I personally think they do that on purpose. Stuffing Balls are also readily available if you have had Turkey or if you are partial to them.
They have a great variety of vegetables, al under a hot plate and these normally consist of carrots, swede, cabbage, brocolli, roast potatoes and leeks. I have found that they don't change there choices very often and mashed potato and peas seem to be rarely available which I would consider to be popular choices although personally I don't like peas. I do think that if they are not busy on certain days the quality of the food can be poor as it sits under the hotplate and isn't changed regular to ensure fresh produce is there so sometimes it is dried up and not very appetising.
It's pretty good value for money, £8 on a sunday and cheaper mid week. YOu are waited on if you have starters and mains and are allocated your own assistant. I don't find that they attend to you much though if you are only having the carvery.
NOt bad for Sunday lunch but you can get it from other places, fresher and lot tastier.
