Advantages: Good food, good atmosphere, good value

Disadvantages: None

This review will focus on Toby Carvery in Croydon, South London. This is the only one I have visited, so I couldn't tell you if they are all of the same standard.

The restaurant itself is made up of a seated restaurant area, a bar and space to just have drinks, and there are guest rooms upstairs. Despite being part of a chain, I feel that the restaurant and bar have quite a tradtional pub feel to them, with warm lighting, comfortable seating, and lots of pictures on the wall.

The restaurant of couse serves a traditional English carvery meal, but also offers a different alternative each night such as chinese dishes one night, an curry another.

The carvery itself consists of a choice of three meats, usually turkey, beef and gammon. You can choose just one of these, or have more than one. The meat is served with huge, freshly cooked yorkshire puddings. There is a vast selection of potatoes and vegetables to choose from, and it's very easy to fill your plate having a little bit of everything!

Although the food is displayed on hot plates, it always looks very fresh and appetising. There also seems to be a constant stream of fresh vegetables and potatoes coming out from the kitchen and replacing the dishes that are already out.

The food I've eaten there has always been of very high quality, well cooked and tasty. I've only had the carvery there, so couldn't comment on the alternative dishes they serve there, although they do always look nice.

The service at our Toby Carvery has always been very good. As you go up and help yourself to food, the waitresses only really take drinks orders, but I've always found them to be very friendly, chatty and helpful. We've been a number of times over the past few years, and a lot of the staff remain the same, so they must be a fairly good employer.

The price of the carvery is very reasonable at £7.50 for a carvery meal. There are also numerous special offers most of the time, including a carvery meal for £5 before 7pm, or a carvery and a drink (wine, beer or pepsi) for £7.50.

Toby Carvery is a very friendly, family restaurant with excellent food and service, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Summary: A nice alternative to cooking!
