Advantages: Delicious food at cheap prices, great fun night, everything was brilliant
Disadvantages: Nothing
Twin Palace is a Chinese noodle bar and restaurant in Bexleyheath, Kent. This is a great place to go for a night out with a big group as they have huge tables and, after eating, you can get up and have a dance on the dance floor. Because it's such a great place for both food and entertainment, there's always the large groups of people there to celebrate any occasion from a birthday to a hen night.
The restaurant is very big with a long bar on the left hand side, a dance floor at the front and a raised area for some tables on the right. The rest of the restaurant is filled with tables, mostly huge round ones which can fit up to 14 people seated around them. In the centre of the round tables there is a circular glass platform which you can spin round. This is what the food is placed on and customers then just spin the platform when they want something on the other side of it. The restaurant is decorated in a modern Chinese style cream coloured walls, orange lanterns hanging from the ceiling and traditional Chinese pictures on the walls.
The menu is great at Twin. They have a huge buffet menu costing £14.80 per adult and £9.80 per child. Firstly, you can pick from a range of starters, Hors D'oeuvre and soups. Then there is a course of crispy duck and lamb served with tortilla wraps and salad. After the beginning courses, main is served and you have a wide range of choice from all the usual Chinese dishes. You don't get an individual plate of the food but a small bowl and they bring out portions of everyone's order to put in the centre of the table so that people can try each dish. They usually count how many people are having the buffet at the table and will make enough food to go around. And if you want more you can just keep ordering and they will freshly cook up and bring out as much as you like. If you have a big appetite or like to try a wide range of the food then this is a great option as you can order as much as you like throughout the entire evening. This is the menu that most customers here go for but there is also the option of a normal Chinese menu where you can just pick out your own individual dish. My husband is a fussy eater and only eats the one Chinese dish and I was very surprised that, amongst a table of others having the buffet, they let him have his own individual menu dish which cost him only £3.50 and the plate was filled up high with food.
All of the food is really delicious and much better quality than in the cheaper and more simple Chinese take aways and restaurants. The sesame prawn toast and shredded chicken Hors D'oeuvre are my favourite and I could not stop eating them, especially the shredded chicken. I don't eat red meat so I made sure I had plenty of shredded chicken left which I used in the tortilla wraps which were also really delicious and I could easily have just eaten those all night. I had my usual main of sweet and sour chicken which was also very tasty with good quality cooked chicken and a range of different types of rice or noodles. It was all so yummy! The only trouble with having the buffet is that, because different dishes are being brought out at different times and because there is always food on the table, everyone ends up eating far too much and much more than you realise. But make sure you don't get full up on just the starters and wraps as many people end up doing this and then have no room for the main course. Also if you get too stuffed you'll feel too sick to dance afterwards!
The small dance floor at the front of the restaurant flashes with random bright colours as soon as the DJ starts at around 9pm every evening. The DJ played some great music ranging from current chart songs to older 70s and 80s music which is just what everyone needs to get them up on the dance floor. The DJ was very good and I noticed that, if he put a song on which caused some people to leave the dance floor, he changed the song straight away so that dance floor was always full and the music was always that which people enjoyed. Because it's only small though, the dance floor does get packed but my hugely pregnant aunt managed to squeeze on so there's always room.
All of the staff were also brilliant - they were always there when needed, brought out the food quickly and were very smily and friendly. I know there is another Twin restaurant in Dartford, Kent, but I'm not sure if there are any others.
I'd never been here before until my aunt's birthday a few weeks ago, even though it's in my local town. But now that I've been there and had a really great time, I definitely consider this one of the best places to go for great food, drink and dancing, and it will, without a doubt, be at the top of my list for the next birthday or other celebration do.
Summary: Great food, great dancing, great place to spend a fab evening

- 23/06/09 I shouldn't read these at lunchtime. Always fancy Chinese, but tend to regret it afterwards ... top-notch review. |
