Advantages: Good Starters.

Disadvantages: Everything else.

I too went to Vintner's when on holiday in Whitby and can only summise it has changed hands. We should have turned away when we spotted the dirty carpet and touched the sticky banister on the stairs up to the restaurant.

For the prices he was charging (av. £16.50 main course) we expected so much better. Cheap pub style furniture, no tablecloths or linen napkins, a grubby interior and a cooking style that seemed to rely rather heavily on the microwave and commercially prepared food. The starters were OK - home made pate and duck livers - but the mains were a disaster, vegetables obviously pre-cooked and re-heated and they looked it. The venison was 'strips of' and had obviously come out of a large portion vacuum pack as the chef's recommendation to those arriving after us changed to venison once we had ordered! I had the Thai style swordfish which was a swordfish steak smothered in a, red sauce that bore absolutely no resemblance to any Thai food I had ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot). Neither main course had any 'flavour' to speak of - rather disappointing given the flowery descriptions on the menu.

We could see the other two couples in the restaurant were as disgruntled as us. We paid £70.00 for two courses and two glasses of wine, we couldn't bear to stay for dessert, . I am afraid the experience spoilt the enjoyment of our holiday and we consider it extremely overpriced for the quality of the food and the ambience of the place. We had a better meal for a quarter of the price in a pub in town.

What a shame that things have obviously changed so much - I much prefer to send in good reviews.

Summary: Go somewhere else!

Don't judge a book by its cover

Totally do not agree with these comments. We have been to the Vintner many times and never been dissapointed in the food, it has always been excellent, we never eat anywhere else in Whitby, we look at menus elsewhere but always return to the Vintner, we have travelled all the way from Leeds just to go for a meal. Don't know what this quy is talking about. Excellent food
