Ryde's premier fish and chip shop used to be a class restaurant / takeaway called 'Tonys'. It was the perfect place to pick up a chip butty back in the early 90's when there was nothing to buy in Woolworths (remember Woolworths?). Chip buttys are a thing of the past, as many people seem to now want 'gourmet' food, so whats wrong with a greasy chip and a pink sausage?

Tony's came and went and after the establishment changed hands several times, Wights came along. 'Wights' presumably named after The Isle of Wight, is THE place to get your chips when you need 'em.

Fish and Chips is a classic British meal. You can judge the quality of a chip shop from the price and freshness of the fish. A portion of chips and a huge fresh fish will set you back £5.20 at Wights. Fish seems to have got extremely expensive of late, mainly down to the amount of fish that is being caught, or not caught, in the north sea.


The chips are just right, not too greasy, not too hard. They aren't the horrible scrag-ends that some chippies serve up. The fish isn't smothered in tons of batter - it is fresh and tasty.

Wights have recently minimized their menu. Gone are the chicken nuggets and curry sauce. Its been replaced by 'gourmet burgers' and posh fish and chips. So much for chip buttys!

Wights have also renovated their shops front and restaurant. It has been tastefully done in shiny new tiles of white and blue. The stainless steel is pristine and the old staff and been issued with stripy ties.

I highly recommend a visit to Wights. I would travel quite a distance for a decent fish and chips - so its great to have one so close.

Summary: A fantastic place to get food!
