winstons is the best!!! yes there might be a 30min wait at busy times but thats because everything is cooked fresh there must be over 150 seats there and people still que that says everything to me love the food love the service and the new look is great thumbs up to you guys
When my boyfriend recently came over to see me he decided to take me and my flatmate out for a meal. I already have my favourite chippy on the beach but that place is a takeaway (The Water Front and I have written a review on the place on here), but it was a cold day and we were all a bit tired and so he decided we needed to sit down in somewhere and eat.
This place has won awards and they are not shy in letting you know that on billboards and signs all over Weston. It is a corner building, rather large with blue and yellow banners around it and some seating outside. You walk in you have the take away section or you can go through and sit down and be table waited on, which is what we did.
The restaurant is just that really. Light wooden seats and tables with condiments there already and lots of fish tanks built into the walls, the tables are not too packed in, are of different shapes and sizes and there are about 20ish of them. The you are given a menu and away you go!
On the menu its all pretty much fish and chips really. For about £6.50-£9.50 you can have lots of different options of fish such as the usual cod, haddock, sea bass and lemon sole all with chips. There is a small kids menu on there too at about £4.00 each and sausages and pies at about £5.00 with chips as well.
My friend ordered haddock and chips which was about £7.95 and me and my boyfriend ordered the cod and chips for £6.50 and I ordered a side dish of mushy peas for £1.50. We had a long wait to be served and when we were we wished we hadn't been!
First off my mushy peas were not mushy but pureed. All green juice and looked really disgusting. My boyfriend who has a bit of a short temper called the waitress back and asked her what it was she was trying to feed me! She quickly took them back and came back a few minutes later (when my meal was almost eaten) with mushy peas and she was apologetic to be fair but we were not impressed.
The fish was beautiful though. We all enjoyed that and it really was a fat piece of chunky fish, the batter was amazing and no bones or skin in any of our fishes. The salad threw on the side was wet and soggy and the chips...well they are the worst I've tasted in a long time. They tasted like slightly raw oven chips, there wernt many of them but we all only ate one each and actually left them they were that gross. When the waitress came to clear the table she asked if everything was ok and I had to put my hand almost over my boyfriends mouth...I just wanted to leave. The only things ok were the fish and cups of tea (£1.50 each) we all had and it wasn't a cheap place to be so disappointed in, in my opinion!
The place itself is lovely and clean as are the staff. Its a busy place and I don't know whether our experience was a one off but I won't be parting with any more of my cash here to find out about that! The toilets are clean enough and the setting is a nice one but its such a shame the food isn't great! You can pay by cash, debit or credit card here, there is a disabled loo and the take away is a bit cheaper, though those prices vary of course.
If your interested in eating here you need to call for opening times as they do very much vary.
