Yming is a Chinese restaurant located just off Shaftsbury Avenue on Greek Street. Six of us celebrated a birthday a few weeks back and we were not disappointed. The table was booked over the phone a week in advance with there being no booking fee. On arrival we were seated at a round table. The waiter brought one of the £26 set menus and 7 normal menus. We each could choose from the set menu or pick individual dishes that we preferred. We did not choose the set menu as the price of wine would come on top of that, making it slightly steeper for everyone individually. The price will be fine to anyone who wants to dine for about £20 to £25 per head including a glass of wine.
The atmosphere was calm, the restaurant was smaller than I'd imagined but this was good as the staff tended to all tables without appearing rushed for time or being unable to be probed about any specific dishes in detail. The staff were funny and informal. There is a 10% service charge added as long as you are happy with the service. The service we received was perfect. On finishing our meal the table was cleared of the plates, and they dimmed the lighting and brought out our birthday cake on a stand, singing, having lit a candle. This rounded off the night nicely and so we had a lovely experience in Yming- the food, the atmosphere, the staff and the value for money. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy lovely Chinese food with great service and especially to anyone looking to celebrate an occasion with a group of people.
"Yming" in Greek Street is not in the centre of Chinatown but still quite close. ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere is formal, its not suitable for an everyday diner there. This is more the restaurant for a date. At the time we have been there, I have seen mainly European clientele. According to their homepage they have non-smoking areas. TOILETS: These are clean, so nothing to complain. They use marble for the sink which makes it look nice. FOOD: We ordered "chicken with fresh mango" (£7.80), Manton (£2.00), "extra fried rice with pineapple and shrimps" (£5), jasmine tea for two (£2). Altogether the quality of the food was very good except the pineapple which was rather tasteless. The jasmin tea had whole leaves which is a sign of the good quality. They have lots of unusual dishes, like Manton and other Northern China cuisine. Apparently they have won some "Rosette Award 2000" whatever that is. SERVICE: Seems to be quite good. The waiter was helpful even though I didn't understand much because he explained it in Chinese to my wife. ;) Really funny was that they automatically gave us the desert menue without asking after we had finished our main meal. On the menue it says "If you required a taxi please ask the staff", which means good service ...or they know a company which pays commission. ;) PRICE: Price-wise its quite steep, the bill with the service charge amounted to £18.50. So nothing for an everyday visit. They have a homepage (http://www.yming.com/) which is _again_ unusual, so you could say this is an unusual restaurant and worth
