Au Quai Restaurant (Hamburg)Newest Review: ... that I discovered that Au Quai is supposed to be French-Italian in style. I'd have to say that it wasn't at all clear from the menu or the setting. 'Utterly pretentious' in influence would probably be nearer to the knuckle; not so much a case of 'fusion' cooking - more one of 'confusion'. I travel to Hamburg a lot for work and one of the plus-points of this is that I've been lucky enough to be invited out to some of the city's nicest restaurants. On my most recent visit, an Italian colleague told me he'd take me to 'The Best Restaurant in Town' so I should be sure to 'dress up a bit'. Italians have always despaired of my dress sense so that was no great surprise. He ran into one of our French colleagues in the hotel lobby and so the three of us set off to the restaurant expecting something very special - after all, Italians rarely think any restaurant outside Italy is worthy of such praise.
