Advantages: great service, not too expensive
Disadvantages: food is good but not 'wow' good, if you know what I mean!
I have recently returned from Las Vegas and one of the places we ate whilst we were there was the California Pizza Kitchen restaurant located inside the Mirage hotel. As this is a chain restaurant it is actually one of four located in Vegas, the others being in McCarran airport, Fashion Show Mall and the Town Square.
We decided on this restaurant just because we were passing at the time really and both fancied pizza. The restaurant is rather unusual in that it is on a slightly raised platform, but being inside a hotel, the walls are only around shoulder height when sitting down, which does mean passers by can look in at you eating. It is also next to a sports bar, so there can be some noise from people cheering/booing and suchlike if a significant game is being shown, so if quiet is what you're looking for it may be worth trying a different branch.
We waited at the entrance of the restaurant and were seated quickly by a waitress who brought us both huge glasses of cola with ice. The menu is mainly pizza as you would expect, but there is also a good range of salads and pasta available too. I was toying with ordering a salad, but the lady at the next table had one and it was absolutely huge, far bigger than I knew I would be able to eat. This lead me to worry about just how big the pizza was going to be, as I'm sure you all know American portion sizes can be a little extreme at times. I queried with the waitress how big the pizzas were and whether they were big enough to share, as it was only lunch time. She assured me they were only 'individual sized' and we would need one each, however when it came out it was actually a full 12 inch pizza (possibly bigger as it was overhanging the plate it was so large!), so we definitely could have shared one.
I chose just a pepperoni pizza whilst my husband had one called 'The Meat Cravers' which is topped with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ham and salami. Both pizzas tasted really good (I tried my husbands), the base was soft and not too thick and mine wasn't greasy at all which can sometimes be the case with pepperoni. I would probably say that the food was better than I would expect from a chain restaurant. It was not the most outstandingly amazing pizza I've ever eaten, but it was still certainly very good - at least a four out of five rating for taste.
I can't fault the staff here either, a lady carrying a jug of cola and a jug of something else (possibly water) walked around constantly topping up our drinks, even when my glass only had around an inch gone from the top. Our waitress was really nice too, very friendly and informative about the menu and the food was quick to the table.
I can't be 100% sure of prices since I don't have the receipt but I seem to remember it came in at around $35 plus tip. It certainly was not expensive and the price was in line with similar places we ate when we were there. At the current exchange rate that works out at around £21, which I think is fairly good for 2 people.
Overall, I would recommend California Pizza Kitchen and would be happy to eat there again if ever I go back to the US. The food, although not outstanding or exceptional in any way was still very good for what it was. It was more than worth the price and the service was excellent too, so it gets a thumbs up from me.
Summary: A great place for pizza in Vegas
