Advantages: Inexpensive good Greek inspired food at very reasonable prices
Disadvantages: No alcohol licence (though you can BYOB), a little cramped
It is a uniquely British thing (and perhaps German) that kebabs and Gyros are eaten from a greasy takeaway. The Canal Street Grill in Yardley, Pennsylvania proves that this isn't so.
Located on a little side road near the canal (not surprisingly) in Yardley, Pennsylvania (a northern suburb of Philadelphia), this family run restaurant is casual, bright and cheery. The tables are fairly plain, but clean, and big enough to fit the number of people they seat. The tables are not too close together, though they are a wee bit cosy - when I've been there, I've been able to chat with people sitting near us.
You find a mixture of families, small groups and couples in here. Whilst the restaurant doesn't have a liquor licence you can bring your own wine (BYOB) - they'll give you glasses and open the wine for you without paying corkage. They have soft drinks (the usual - cola, lemonade, plus iced tea - something you rarely find here), many of which come in a 'bottomless' cup - this doesn't mean they spill everywhere, but just that they'll refill them for you!
The food is Greek/American themed, by and large, though they do have some salads clearly influenced by oriental cuisine. You can order salad platters, where you can choose a selection of up to four salads, both traditional American/continental, and oriental influenced noodle salads. Many main courses offer the choice of a Greek Salad - this comes recommended, They also have burgers, buffalo wings and a handful of Greek and American/Italian influenced main courses, but The Canal Street Grill is justifiably famous for its Gyros (the Greek/American name, I suspect, for our Donar Kebab). You have a choice of lamb, chicken or steak (none of it carved from what looks like a giant leg). These are delicious. The meat is tender (whether you go for lamb, steak or chicken), the sauce is garlicy and succulent, and these are most decidedly not drowning in fat. The bread and salad served with the meat compliments meat and sauce beautifully. Fries and a Greek salad are offered along with the Gyros, and the portions are enormous. You'll certainly not go hungry.
Prices are reasonable - a giant Gyro will cost you just short of $10 - a side order of fries and Greek salad adds only another $2.00. You'll pay around $20 for the most expensive item on the menu - and most are far cheaper. They also have a lunchtime and a children's menu. You can download menus (and read more about the establishment) here: http://canalstreetgrill.com/index.htm - where you can also discover their opening hours:
Tuesday - Thursday 11am - 9pm
Friday - Saturday 11am - 10pm
Monday - Sunday 11am - 8pm
This is a lovely little family restaurant. Tucked away down a little side street, it would be easy to miss. That would be a shame. There is a small car park, and they take Visa or cash. Enjoy.
Summary: An excllent, keenly priced Greek grill family restaurant in Yardley PA.
