This diner near Times Square in Manhattan, New York City boasts a really unique atmosphere indeed.
The interior is very retro in full 1950's American diner style, the staff all dress as they would have done working in a diner in this era and they also 'sing' along to music in between serving customers. Many of them are probably Broadway hopefuls and I don't doubt some will go on to this as the ones singing all certainly had good singing voices.
The interior decor of this location sort of reminds you of that old TV programme 'Happy Days' which is set in a 1950's American diner but Ellen's Stardust Diner plays a wide range of music to all tastes.
There were also occasions when customers could request songs for someone such as for a birthday or other special occasion.
Onto the food and service; the food was very reasonably priced and you got generous enough portions. As we only visited this diner during breakfast (twice), I can only review the breakfasts I'm afraid. There were healthy options like freshly squeezed orange juice, Grenola in Activia and Bagels in cream cheese and there were others like Pancakes with bannana & walnut or strawberries. They also served tea/coffee and you got a free refill. The food and drink quality at this diner was very fresh and tasted very good indeed.
The customer service was always excellent as you were served quickly, with a smile and you didn't have to wait long for your meal either.
I recommend this place to everyone I know who is visiting New York! This place is amazing and you really have to be a miserable person indeed not to enjoy a meal at Ellen's Stardust Diner, New York City. This place is designed like a traditional American diner with booth tables and memorabilia all over the walls. The food is amazing with the best burgers ever and a fantastic ice cream milkshake menu!! The key thing about this place is that all the staff sing! They are all ex Broadway stars and basically work here inbetween musical/show jobs. So don't be surprised to have your waiter singing a Grease duet on the table while you are waiting for your order! The food is not too expensive at all and well worth it considering that you are getting free entertainment too! (well - they do ask for a donation but they deserve it!). There is also a cool little mechanical train that runs round the ceiling area of the restaurant which is a nice addition! You cannot miss this place if you head to New York - it is definitely a must see! (http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com)
New York it's not so big but with all the things to see and do it seems much bigger and with the majority of hotels offering room only, eating out is the only option and finding a good restaurant can be hit and miss which is why I always like reading people's reviews before I go away.
Once you become familiar with the way the New York Streets operate then finding this Diner will not be a problem it is on the corner of Broadway adjacent to West 51st Street next to the Gershwin Theatre you will find that the queues will lead you there!
*~*About the Restaurant*~*
What makes this one different from all the others? Simply the fact that when you walk through the door you are transported back to the 1950's to a traditional style American Diner complete with burgers, shakes and cola floats and what's even better its complete with singing waiting staff.
Its great for everyone, the kids love it which makes it an ideal location for a special celebration and if you're a big kid like me then you will want to go here every time you vist.
The restaurant has an extensive menu offering fast food to traditional hearty american meals. There is seating both upstairs and downstairs and when it is full and it does tend to be then it can feel a little crammed but this has no effect on the atmosphere or dining experience as the staff sing around you and dance on the tables to old tunes from years gone by.
To view a selection of the menu's offered before you visit you can log onto their website www.ellensstardustdiner.com and here you will find the full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I have been to Elle's a few times now and the first time I had the "Love me Tenders" which were chicken fingers ina crunchy breadcrumb coating with fires and a honey mustard sauce and it is delicious and a snip at only $13.50 (approximately £6.75) and on another visit I had the "Roast Tom's Turkey" which really was a huge serving of Roast Turkey, apple sage stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy and whipped potatoes served piping hot so delicious!!! $15.95 was a reasonable price for a filling meal in the winter in New York (approximately £7.95).
There are lots of lighter options on the menu as well but I recommend visiting for a main meal to get the most from your visit as the staff will entertain you throughout your meal you won't want to leave.
I would recommend either emailing them or calling them to make a reservation if you are visiting new york at a particular busy time such as Thanksgiving or Christmas as this place is busy throughout the year.
The cocktails should be tried as these are fantastic, I opted for the Strawberry Daiquiri whilst my friend had the more desirable manhattan favourite of the Cosmopolitan.
I cannot fault Ellen's diner the prices are reasonable and entertainment is thrown into the bargain, if you are plannign a visit then I recommend you visit here the food is tasty and served hot and fresh and really makes you feel that you are in traditional New York and after all who wants to go away and eat in the same places as you can back home??
A retro 1950's diner filled with nostalgic memorabilia.
