Advantages: Pretty and great food.
Disadvantages: Do not insult the locals!
Little Italy is in downtown Manhattan. It is a very small area of town and not nearly as big as I expected it to be. There are 4 main streets to Little Italy and they cross each other in a square shape. All of the roads are pretty. They have lots of trees which are always decorated with strings of little white lights. In the evening, this makes Little Italy appear very romantic. There are lots and lots of Italian restaurants and cafes (surprise, surprise) lining the four main roads and each one has lots of tables outside. There are also lots of little shops which are open way into the night selling all kinds of tat like T-shirts, posters, photo cards and that kind of thing, mainly tourist stuff really. I would recommend eating in a restaurant in Little Italy. Not only is the food excellent (because many of the clients are not tourists but second generation Italians) but the atmospehereis electric and the entertainment comes from spotting the rich and dangerous eating with their families. There is not a lot in Little Italy to keep you there for any real length of time. I would suggest a meal, a little stroll and then take a right into Chinatown which is next door.

Elenitasan - 06.09.00 True, Little Italy is a nice place to visit. If you really want to see where the Italians live, go to Little Italy in The Bronx. Visit Arthur Avenue and you will not be disappointed. Less glitzy but the real thing. Lots of good restaurants and fun places to hang out with the locals |
