Advantages: Meat, meat and more delicious meat
Disadvantages: err, not enough meat?
Meat takes pride of place in Hungarian cuisine but rarely is it done with such care and attention.
The Pampas Argentinean Steakhouse sits on the corner of Vamhas Korut and Veres Palne utca and is a large diner. Myself and my Partner arrived on a Friday night at 6.30pm and even then there was much humming and haring over whether they could seat us since we didn't have a reservation - make sure you reserve!
The menu was varied for the starter and desert - I had the Argentinean specialties of pastries 3 pastries stuff with Cheese, Chicken and Pork (separately, I did imagine they were all coming in the same pastry case initially!) They were pretty good but essentially mini pasties with fillings!
The real reason why you're here though is for the steaks and, my, they are good. My partner opted for the Angus Sirloin and I went for the Hungarian Filet Mignon and both were excellent cuts. All steaks come in 3 sizes, 200g, 320g and 480g. We went for the 320g and it was huge. Both steaks were cooked rare and its nice to find a restaurant who knows what rare means. The steak was delicious, melt in the mouth bliss. There were the options for side sauces (peppercorn, blue cheese etc) but I would not have wanted to mask the taste with a sauce. We chose some standard vegetable sides which were good.
For dessert we both went for the cheesecake which was plain, baked and perfectly delicious. The service was discreet and our waiter was very helpful, helping my partner to choose an appropriate glass of red wine for his steak.
Price was the meal, for 1 starter, 2 main, 2 deserts, 2 waters, 1 beer and a glass of red wine came to about Ł35. Considering this is the best steak you are likely to find in Budapest I challenge anyone to find a better meal.
Go and enjoy!
Summary: Great meat, good service - go and enjoy!
