Advantages: Excellent food & atmosphere

Disadvantages: -

The Reichenberger Griechenbeisl (or Greeks Inn) is an ancient hostelry at 11 Fleischmarkt, serving excellent Viennese food. It's a short walk from Schwedenplatz, just one stop on the U1 metro line from Stephansplatz. The inn dates back to the 1500s. it was originally called the Yellow Eagle but got its present name because Fleischmarkt is an area where Greek and Levantine traders came and settled when trade with the Orient was flourishing. One of its claims to fame is that it was the first inn to sell Pilsner Urquell back in the 1850s. Many famous people are said to have dined here, including Wagner, Schubert and Mark Twain to name but a few.

The restaurant is in fact a collection of rooms, on different levels, each decorated in an individual though traditional style. We visited on a Wednesday evening, having booked a few hours earlier. We were seated in a candlelit cellar room which was quite full, with a good atmosphere, including accordion player. It would definitely be necessary to book in advance for a Friday or weekend.

Weiner Schnitzel, green salad, house wine, sweet and coffee were all top notch and the service excellent. Not the cheapest place to eat but a real taste of old Vienna.
