Advantages: relax atmosphere and good service

Disadvantages: the food is not great

Brass Bell is a seafood and grill restaurant situated in Kalk Bay, Cape Town. Kalk Bay is half an hour drive from Cape Town. Brass Bell restaurant sits at the water edge.

We went twice to Brass Bell and both times after a trip to Cape Point. It was a good place to take a break after watching baboons trying their luck to grab food from the visitors in Cape Point.

Kalk Bay is a working harbour in the Cape. The place has a feeling of the old world and the shops sell mainly antiques, old books and vintage clothing. Brass bell is inconspicuous from the road. To get to Brass bell, you need to walk through an underpass towards the direction of the sea.

There are 5 theme restaurant and pubs inside Brass Bell. There is the Bikini deck is an alfresco bar.

The a la carte restaurant seats a 100 people and is located on the upper floor. The glass windows provide a unblocked view of the ocean and the waves as it rushes towards the shore. I was told that this part of the restaurant is less noisy.

The Pavillion which seats 40 people is a raised glass encased gazebo above the terrace. We sat in The Pavillion on our first visit. The gazebo provides a breathtaking view of the waves crashing into the walls of the building. We drank South African beer (can't remember the name), had a spicy Malay seafood soup and some chips. I didn't' like the soup but the beer and the chips were great.

The Cabin is a small and cosy restaurant that seats 30 people. We had to seat in The Cabin the second time we were there as the other part of the restaurants were filled. The waves were extremely strong that day and we could literally see the waves crashing into the part of the wall next to us. It was exhilarating. On this occasion, as the group is bigger, we had Hake and chips, spicy calamari and rice. I was told the Hake and chips were good, I didn't like the rice but the spicy calamari was tasty.

The last restaurant is the Water Edge which right next to the sea. The Water Edge spills over to the tidal pool.

It was windy and the waves was crashing strongly against the building, hence no one was sitting at the Bikini Deck and the Water Edge. I did see some children with their father having fun in the tidal pool.

The food isn't great but the atmosphere is brilliant. The ambience of Brass Bell restaurant is relaxing, hip and the service is magnificent. The waiters don't seem to stop trying to make us feel welcome and is always attentive to us. Their relax composure and happy smile is an asset to the extraordinary place.

Summary: Go there when you are in Cape Town

Sounds cool - waves crashing against the building! Nicely reviewed.
