Advantages: some lovely food

Disadvantages: some crappy food

We went to Prague for our honeymoon, and had a lot of different food experiences. First off, the 'national' dishes are pretty nasty in Prague - all dark meat, spicy sausage and salty sauces, so don't be tempted by any of them (as I was one day). They sound nice on the menu but are terrible!

There are some really nice places to eat - the seafood restaurant at the Radisson is one of the best in the world, and will cost you £150 for a meal for two (we didn't go but it looked good!) On the other hand, avoid cheap Chinese places that have signs outside saying meals are around £3. Not only are they a con in that you have to pay extra for rice and everything else, they use microwaves to heat the food (yuk).

Restaurants are best avoided on a Sunday, as they don't get fresh veg delivered, and a meal we had on a Thursday that was stunning was terrible on the Sunday with old washed out veg.

There is always salmon on the menu in most places (which my wife had all the time) whereas I tried something more daring.

Be careful with the language - I ordered a meal for two for myself one night, because I understood the food but not the line that basically said 'for two to share'. I ate 7 different steaks with chips that night!

The best place we found was twenty minutes walk down river. They served chicken in smugglers spices, greek salads, salmon and more - pretty much British favourites. There was always bread on the table, and great ice cream based desserts. On our last day we ordered 4 main meals and 2 desserts and paid £17 including drinks, so there's value if you look for it.

As with most tourist places, avoid something that seems too cheap to be true (it is), and head for small but clean cafes and restaurants.

Summary: eat and eat well!

I really enjoyed traditional czech dishes when we were there - the stews were lovely. But each to their own

I quite like Czech food - I wouldn't dismiss it outright

I agree - we ate some crappy food whilst we were there and the traditional food is a bit heavy on the stomach. But we had some fab meals too - especially Cowboys up near the castle, which had the biggest hamburgers I'd ever seen!
