Advantages: Many reasonably prices choices, Some fine restaurants
Disadvantages: I won't get a free dinner for the recommendations from you!
One of the ways in with the vocabulary of Austrian German differs from that of Hochdeutsch(Standard German) is that the cultural and culinary influences on Austria have been allowed to leave their lasting mark on Austrian German. It therefore comes as no surprise that it is possible to eat a wide variety of sumptuous cuisine in Vienna - often considerably more cheaply than in London, and that a holiday in Vienna will often leave enduring memories of the fine food and wine that is to be enjoyed here - it isn't just Wiener Schnitzel until it comes out of your ears... Many of the restaurants listed in this review are ones that I have written separate reviews on, so for more detail have a nose around and you'll perhaps get a better impression of some of these places. I have been enjoying wining (and sometimes whining!) and dining in Vienna for the last two and a half years and have rapidly built up quite a list of places to eat out at, with a wide range of budgets taken into consideration in choosing the establishments. So without further ado, I'll start trying to steal Gault Millau and Falter's thunder -Falter's "Wien, wie es isst?" is the definitive guide to eateries in Vienna, available in print and now online at http://www.falter.at, but I'll save you the job of having to separate the chaff from the grain, and give you my personal recommendations - grouped by type of cuisine... I have pointed to the website where possible - the info is usually more up to date on the website that I can manage - otherwise I have added a contact no for the place as well as how to get there on public transport. Mexican & Cocktails: The combination seems to go rather well really, and I have got two to recommend in particular here - both tend to require reservations as they get very popular and there are various cocktail promos: Maria's Roses (1st District, Bibergasse 8 - U3 Stubentor) www.marias.at: <
br>Mexican food and cocktails, and open all week round between 6pm and midnight, with the show bar being open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm until 4am - although there are also some special events on Wednesday nights. Pancho (2nd District, Blumauergase 1a - Tram: 21) www.pancho.at Once again food and cocktails with a happy hour between 6pm and 8pm on a daily basis, and the restaurant/cocktail bar is open until 2am daily. Reservations can be made by phoning +43 (1) 212 58 69 - generally best reserving a day in advance. Mango: (6th District, Theobaldgasse 11 - Bus: 57A, U-Bahn U3 Neubaugasse - 2 mins walk) www.titanicbar.at Fine range of South American wines and latino cuisine - this is the upstairs part of Titanic, one of Vienna's most popular nightclubs. Very chilled out on week nights. Reservations: +43 (1) 587 47 58 Italian: Cantinetta Antinori (1st District, Jasomirgottstrasse 3/5 - U1/U3 Stephansdom)www.antinori.it Serves great Italian food and wines from the Antinori region - can be a bit pricey (e.g. about 40 quid a head for dinner), and reservations recommended. There is also a reasonably priced midday menu - and great freshly pressed fruit juices which have definitely got fine curative properties. Reservations +43 (1) 533 77 22 I ragazzi (7th District, Burggasse 6-8 - U2 Volkstheater) www.iragazzi.at Very reasonable traditional southern Italian cuisine, with great cheap pizzas, pasta dishes and meat dishes, with a very reasonable wine list. Went with an Italian girl so it must be good! Reservations: +43 (1) 522 63 25 Spanish: Cantino (1st District, Seilerstätte 30 - U1,U2, U4 Karlsplatz/Oper) Spanish cuisine will a wide selection of meat and fish dishes and of course plenty of Tapas, and a wide selection of wines, open from 6pm Mondays-Saturdays, with an outstanding view over the Stephansdom roof! Quite pricey e.g. dinner for two with
wine and coffee, approx EUR 130. Indian: I would be the first to concede that Vienna lacks a really world-class Indian restaurant although there are some good ones about if you choose carefully... Himalaya (7th District, Schottenfeldgasse 17 - U3 Zieglergasse) www.himalaya-restaurant.at Food is a mixture of South Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine and there are very reasonably price Thali platters, a wide variety of meat dishes and they even serve Cobra beer! Curries come in all manner of fieriness! Reservations +43 (1) 971 4664 - prices reasonable Safran (9th District, Garnisongasse 10 - U2 Schottentor) Reasonably priced restaurant with a wide variety of foods - ask for a non-Austrian menu for anything hotter than medium! Reservations +43 (1) 407 4234 Viennese: Siebensternbräu (7th District, Siebensterngasse 19 - U3 Neubaugasse / Tram: 49) www.7stern.at Typical hearty Viennese fayre with lots of great home-brewed beers. In summer there is a beer garden, which is great and there are also dining areas which are ideal for larger functions - reservations generally essential. Reasonable prices to boot. Reservations +43 (1) 523 8697 Gasthaus Witwe Bolte (7th District, Gutenberggasse 13 - Tram: 49) www.angerer.com Well tucked away, and offering typical Viennese fayre at very reasonable prices and with tables easier to find than elsewhere. Reservations +43 (1) 523 1459 Gasthaus Horvath (5th District, Hamburgerstrasse 2 - U4 Kettenbrückengasse) www.gasthaushorvath.at Outstanding contemporary Austrian cuisine with fine selection of wines, great menu - but not exactly the cheapest in town, although worth every cent! Closed Mondays Reservations: +43 (1) 585 7300 Australian: Crossfields (1st District, Maysedergasse 5 - U1, U2, U4 Karlsplatz / Oper) www.cafe-wien.at Pub grub / Bush Tucker including Grasshoppers, Kangaroo etc. downstair fr
om popular Aussie bar. Very popular, and well advised to reserve a table - +43 (1) 513 0881 16 --- These are just a few of my regular haunts - I'll be adding more to this list on a regular basis! Thanks for reading! Mike
