It might make me a horrible foodie-snob, but I'm inclined to agree with Bill Bryson on one thing; never eat anywhere that has pictures of the food on its menu. It's going to be grim. I'd go further and add one more caveat to the criteria - in Cordoba, at least, and around the hyper-touristy streets cutting at sharp angles off from the Mezquita (Great Mosque), avoid the places with dual versions of their menu on display - even worse, painted on the wall in mile-high letters.
