Advantages: Entertainment while you eat
Disadvantages: Food is nothing outstanding
On a visit to New York we were advised by friends to visit the Jekyl & Hyde Club for its novelty value alone.
The restaurant is situated on 7th avenue south not far from central park and is easily identified by its large monument front.
On approaching the restaurant you are met by a large man in the costume of what i suppose you would call henchman. We were not too sure of the menu and asked the man if a menu was on show outside the restaurant, to which he replied - ENTER!!! We got nowhere with trying to find out the menu and couldn't see one on display outside so took the plunge and went in anyway.
The restaurant cannot be seen from outside so again we were in the dark as to what we were entering. The large door was opened by the Henchman and you are met by a female member of staff dressed as Dracula's Wife. The door closes behind you and you find yourself trapped between the external door and a further door in near enough darkness. (Basically a corridor of about 6 feet by 4 feet painted black) "Welcome to the Jekyll and Hyde Club, do you dare enter?" asks the woman.
A screen appears on the door infront of you and video of a skelton appears "You want to enter the house of Jekyll and Hyde hey?" As the video plays the celing above you starts to lower and spike head towards you. If you don't know what to expect and you have young children with you this could be quite scary for them I would imagine. The lights suddenly come on the ceiling returns to its original position and the skelton say " You've passed the test! You may enter the house of Jeykll & Hyde"
Once we entered the restaurant we were seated and ordered soft drinks. The staff are all dressed in various costumes from Mummy's to frankinstein. You spend the first 10 minutes looking around the restaraunt at pictures on the walls that have moving eyes. The Bears head on the wall above the fireplace and other artifacts placed around the 2 story building.
The menu consisted of the usual Burgers (large variety) chicken, fries etc. Nothing special. But the food is not the real reason you visit this place as it soon begins - a full scale scene from frankenstein including frankenstein himself being lowered from the upper floor while strapped to the mad scientist table. "He's Alive!!" the show continues while you enjoy your food and some customer interaction takes place. (Only if you want to) The whole scene proabably lasted 10 minutes and involves 3 or 4 people. This was followed by the bear head on the wall starting to move and talk to children sat in the restaurant. (Much to the childrens amazement). Waitors also deliver you drinks while showing you the odd trick here and there, such as eating light bulbs off the wall!
If your looking for more than just a burger its a great place to take the kids and be entertained while you dine.
Well worth a visit but as mentioned before make sure your children aren't easily upset as you may find them wanting to leave before you even sat dowm.
Summary: A great place to go to be entertained while you dine.
