Advantages: Superb friendly atmosphere, reasonably priced UberCool
Disadvantages: have to book months in advance
Being 33, I'm at that age where it seems that everyone around me is either married or getting married. Last weekend brought about the last of the Stag do's for the year...unless Angelina and Brad split up, she decides to marry me and i have a stag do at last.... failing that... the last of my friends stag do's was held in salubrious Amsterdam - the home of Van Gogh, the home of Rembrandt (for 3 years) and less well known it is the home of the Supper Club.
The supperclub was booked by the stag months in advance. He had been to Amsterdam before and heard about this place and I must confess having been to Amsterdam on numerous occasions i had not heard of it, although maybe not surprising seeing as most of my visits usually do not extend beyond the hazy limits of Dam square.
To find the place you have to know where it is, as it's tucked away on a little side street without any obvious glaring sign it is there. Upon entrance, we were herded to the bar (one of two) with all the other dinner guests. The clientele seemed of a good sort, well dressed non-chavs from all over the world but predominately English. About 150 of us were addressed by the quirky owner before being taken into the main eating room.
The room is minimalist cool. White cushions replace tables and chairs in the two mezzanines and shoes have to be taken off. We had our own hostess who sparked an evening long debate whether "she " was an Arthur or a Martha and provided great entertainment in adams apple or unnatural bulge spotting all evening. A DJ played mellow Ibiza-esque tunes throughout the 5 course meal interspersed with Burlesque shows and impromptu dancing. There was a feel of Manumission in Ibiza about the place and there was a relaxed friendly atmosphere throughout the entire night.
The Food - Ok, I'm no Lloyd Grossman and the food itself was good enough. The five courses cost 70 Euros and the beef (course 3) was superb as was the toffee ice cream at the end. The soup (course 2) tasted like cold Bisto but overall the food was of a good standard.
What really made this place was its lack of pretentiousness. Probably flouting many an E U regulation, there was a unisex smoking toilet which it seems everybody converged in after every course. This meant that everybody met each other, everybody chatted to each other and this enhanced the exclusive family feel to the place. There was another toilet for those that do not smoke and for those with embarrassing toilet issues, but it reminded me of British parties where everyone seems to converge in the kitchen. Here it was the marijuana smelling toilet.
After the five courses had ended, those not too stuffed danced the night away in either the restaurant or in the bars downstairs. The music was very Euro the drinks reasonably priced but what made the place were the people and the environment we were in. There was a relaxed anything goes attitude within an uber cool setting that did not try too hard. Friendly staff, good food and the most socialable toilets I have ever seen.
The whole night inc drinks and food cost 100 euros a head and considering the amount drunk (it was a stag party after all) that was not bad at all. The Supperclub left a very good impression upon my friends and I and would heartily recommend anyone visiting Amsterdam to book an evening at the Supperclub. You have to book months in advance, and for a reason, but you will not regret it.
