From early in 2012 I knew I would end up purchasing my daughter a wooden kitchen, the one I wanted to buy didn't have any wooden accessories with it so I bet about finding some to purchase to go with it. I bought the kitchen from Early Learning Centre but the accessories seemed to cost a fortune so I looked at buying them from other places. Tesco have started selling their own wooden toys at an affordable price so it was perfect.
As this is a Carousel brand toy, it is only available to purchase from Tesco either in stores that stock toys or online from Tesco direct. Of course being Tesco, you can use your clubcard vouchers to purchase the set and if you wait for a double up promotion you can get it even cheaper. The breakfast set currently costs £10.
The breakfast set comes packaged inside a hardwearing cardboard box with the normal red, basic branding of the Carousel brand. On the front there is a picture of the toy in play. After opening the box I fell in love, the set looked absolutely beautiful. It was packaged with a little tissue paper between each of the pieces to stop it getting damaged in transit. The pieces included in the set include a toaster, 2 slices of toast, jam pot and lid, knife and plate.
The toaster is definitely the item that steals the show within this set, it's around 15cm long, 6cm wide and 10cm high. The toaster has two slots for the bread to be placed and a lever on the side that pops it up and down. When the toast is popped up you can push the lever down and across and it will keep it up sticking out of the toaster. One thing I'm not too keen on with the set is the jam pot, it looks lovely and has a nice picture of a strawberry on the front but my daughter doesn't have jam on her toast and prefers to pretend its butter to spread on the top. All of the pieces in the set are to scale so there isn't a huge plate for a tiny bit of toast or a huge knife to butter tony toast with, it's all in perfect proportion. The overall design of the set is lovely in mainly pale pink colours, each piece has a cute cupcake picture on the front too.
We all know what kids toys can be like these days, all singing, all dancing, headache bringing hindrances, that's why I went down the wooden toy route, not just for my own sanity, but I believe wooden toys help develop children's imaginations and creativity as the amount of play they get out of the toy is totally down to them, they don't have any voices telling them to press this button or do this or that. My daughter has the tea set alongside this breakfast set and she is always making her dolls and teddies tea and toast, it's truly beautiful to watch. I was worried she might get bored of it as it is a very basic toy but even now, in September, she still plays with it as much as she did in January.
I was a little sceptical about the quality of the wooden breakfast set as it costs half the price of a similar set in Early Learning Centre but there was no need to be worried as it is made to a very high standard. The only material used is wood so it is definitely durable, my daughter has played with this lots throughout the year and it's not showing any kind of damage or splintering so far, the paint is all intact and it is in a new condition.
This breakfast set from Tesco's Carousel brand is a fantastic accompaniment to a wooden kitchen, it matches my daughters wooden cottage kitchen perfectly, but at the same time, contains all of the components necessary to make toast so would be a good standalone toy too. It is beautiful to look at and is very long lasting and definitely recommended by both me and my almost four year old.
