Advantages: Great Fun

Disadvantages: Size can be off putting

The problem I always had with AD&D was the enormous amount of information to take in. The basic game really required you to buy the Players Handbook, the DMs Guide, and the Monstrous Manual to get all of the rules you needed to get the emost from it.
Looking back on it now though, some years after I last played it, it was a great laugh. There are plenty of systems that take each other far too seriously (Vampire, for the extreme example), but AD&D doesn't do that. As you read the books, you can tell that the enormous set of rules were made by people who loved playing the game. And don't be put of by the amount of material to absorb, a lesson I learned late on was that you could really play this game at a variety of different levels, from following the rules to the letter, to merely using the spirit of them and winging it lal of the way.
It is one of the oldest systems about, which is the real reason for it's size. As time goes on, the game stayed popular, and TSR kept releasing more stuff. I you want to play a Roleplaying game for fun, and if you see the basic books available cheap, definately give AD&D a go.

Cool, but I really do think it's the worst system out there, because the rules are atrocious and it's the epitomy of geekdom. :)
