This is a book no player can do without. At least, if you really want to play the game and get fully involved. This is one of those books that I find it’s best to keep a pencil attached to. Then, whenever I find myself cross referencing things, you can scribble page numbers and notes around the printed text. It never really has all the things you need to know in one place. This isn’t the books fault, so much as a comment on the complexity of the game. There are still a few places where it contradicts the DMG, but they can be forgiven. All in all this book is a must have. ... Read the complete review

This book is the heart of the AD&D system. From this comes the races, character classes, items and magic of AD&D, all well laid out and organised. The presentation in this revised edition is excellent. The art work, something of a weakness, has improved massively. The AD&D system itself is essentially simple. Each character has a race, such as Human, Elf or Dwarf, and a class or class, such as Fighter, Mage or Thief. While this does limit the players choices, it results in more coherent characters and parties than some of the free form RPGs, and is the system that most people will be familiar with. This volume has more content than the majority of RPG ... Read the complete review
