ELC Bumper Play Food
Advantages: Wide range of food
Disadvantages: Not with standing chewing
When my sister asked if there was anything that my girls would like for their 2nd birthdays one of my suggestions was some play food. I had seen that the Early Learning Centre did this box of Bumper Play Food suitable from 2 years and it looked ideal so this is the one that she got them.
What do you get?
In a cardboard box you get approximately 60 food items, having just done a quick count we've got 58 but I imagine there could easily be another couple of pieces lurking somewhere. I think this is great value and the you get a wide range of food items from chips and chocolate to meat and fish, lots of fruit and veg are included and the ice creams are firm favourites. As it is suitable for 2 year olds it is all plastic so no pretend tins with labels or packet foods.
Playing with the food
Both my girls were instantly taken with exploring all the different shapes and textures that you get with this set. My sister also bought them a toy shopping basket which holds all this toy food perfectly and allows them to take it out and put it back in again or just pick it up and tip it all over the floor!
One of my girls loves holding items up for me to tell her what they are and then tries to say the word herself making this a great educational toy. It is also really useful when teaching little ones their colours as there is such a wide range and it is easy to say the yellow cheese, pink ice cream etc.
Both my girls have suffered with teething and are still waiting for the last back ones to come through meaning that at times they like to chew on this food. The carrot, sausage and banana have suffered the worst and the banana is starting to split meaning it will soon need to be thrown away. I'm a bit disappointed that it has started to split already as they have only had it a couple of months.
Most items are different but there are a couple of cakes and ice creams among others which makes it nice to both be able to pretend to eat the same things.
Price and availability
This set is currently (December 2012) £12 from the Early Learning Centre, it is also available on Amazon for a similar price. I think this is slightly overpriced and is worth waiting for it to be included in one of the Early Learning Centre's frequent sales.
Would I recommend?
Yes, this food is so versatile in terms of playing. It can be used to play shops, have tea parties or just on it's own. I can see my girls playing with this food a lot in the future making it a good addition to any toddlers toy collection.
Summary: A great bumper food set
