Advantages: Good combination of genres
Disadvantages: A littel hard to get to grips with at first
Now how I came across Shadowrun is a bit of a luck really. I was living in a flat and the landlord was throwing away a load of books. He asked if I wanted any, and held out a whole pile of Shadowrun books, rules, campanions, the lot!!! So I had a read, got a couple of mates round, and the rest well...
Take a cyber future, somehwhat Blade Runner like, and mix it with a fantasy world of were magic has returned to the world, dragons run for President of the USA, dwarves, elves and alike fight it out on the dark streets with hackers and cybered-up warriors of all kinds. That is the sort of world that Shadowrun is set in. A good role-playing system, although a little complex for a beginner I'd feel. Although it does contain all the best bits of role playing, and ideal for anyone looking for a complete system to play.
Shadowrun, Third Edition (the edition I found myself with) is a complete rulebook for gamemasters and players. It contains all the rules needed to create characters and ongoing adventures set in the popular Shadowrun universe. Shadowrun, Third Edition updates, revises, expands and clarifies the rules from previous Shadowrun rulebooks (or so the blurb says). It is compatible with previous versions of Shadowrun and with previously published Shadowrun source material (which came with the pile I was given). Now to be fair I do not know if there is a Fourth Edition out there, or higher even. I'm sure that if there is it will be just as good, and little improved, as this version seems fine to me. There are some adjustments that could be made, but then again aren't there always?! No RPG system suits everyone, and role players seem to like to moan about such things.
Simply if you are looking for a role playing system that encapsulates at lot of the elements that are contained within the vast amount of systems that exist out there, then this is a good start point. That's it really.
