Advantages: A great hobby, a fun game. You will meet many new people.
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, can take up a lot of your free time.
You probably haven't right? That will all change if you decide to take up the challenging, sometimes demanding, but always fun hobby of Warhammer 40,000. The fact is that Warhammer 40k is more than just a game. Sure, you can buy the basic game Warhammer box...but why do that? This limits you to a choice of two armies, Space Marines and Dark Eldar. You have no choice about what army you want to collect, they are hand picked for you. My advice is to take a visit into Games Workshop. Games Workshop is the club and shop of all Games Workshop hobbies including Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Mordheim, Epic and many more. These shops come clubs are scattered all across the country and is the place to be for every Warhammer 40k collector. Obviously, you can buy the boxed game from here. But in here is also where you can buy every other army available, it's where you can buy every Assualt Squad, every Sergeant, every Warboss, every Captain that you can imagine! Most people think that Warhammer 40k is a restrictive hobby with just two armies that come with the boxed game. That is by no means the case. The full 40k army list is: Space Marines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Catachans, Necrons, Chaos, Orks, Dark Eldar, Eldar and the newly released Tyrannids. I don't know about you, but considering that each army contains literally hundreds of different units and characters that you can buy, I would not say that Warhamemr 40k is a restrictive hobby!! One complaint that I have to make is the prices. Admittedly, they are not as much as people say they are, but yes, they are overpriced. This fact was enlightened just two weeks ago as the prices went up...again! The amount of money that is needed should not put you off. The basic prices are £15 for a squad of about 12 troops sucha s Devastators or Jungle Fighters. £4 for a H.Q captain or sergeant su
ch as "Logan Grimnar, Wolf Lord" and "Kharn The Betrayer". This amounts to £19, for which you will have a legal army with which you can battle. Not too bad really. Unfortunately, on top of the prices of the models, you also have to buy specific paints, for the obvious reason to paint them. These are very reasonable however, a pot of paint will last you probably a few years, and just for £1.50 that is good value. I would not say that the prices are too bad, certainly not as bad as the scaremongers say anyway. Warhammer 40k collectors oftenhave different reasons to collect, and they usually are: Skilled painters who paint the models extremely well, and use for display purposes only, and then you get the people who buy models, paint them well, but not to perfection and use them for battling their friends. I am the latter although I take amazing pride in my painting, and make sure that I do them to a very high standard. It is a great feeling looking at a model that has just taken you over 3 hours to paint and realizing that you have done a very good job, something that you can be proud of. Although I am a dedicated painter, I also love to battle. Battling is the main part of the hobby and is a great social evernt if you bring some mates around for all out 40th millenium warfare! To battle all you really need is a knowledge of the rules, and a kitvhen table with which to play on, that's it. Ever since I have been a collector, it has turned into more than a hobby as my weekends are often spent painting new models or battling with friends. If you take up the hobby, which I advise you do, you will meet many new friends, and you will have a really fun time. Next time I read one of your opinions I hopefully will be able to salute you as a Warhammer 40k Commander...battle on!!
