I first saw an eastpak bag when I was on a German exchange. Every student there seemed to have one of these bags. I thought maybe it was a school uniform thing but even going around the towns, people seemed to love them. I decided to buy one while I was there. Mostly as mine was getting old rather than the looks of them. I went into one of there shops and fell in love with a blue swirled patterned eastpak bag. I have small birds and flowers scattered around on it. It was around £40 euros if my memory is correct.
I bought it 5 years ago and still have the bag stored in my wardrobe. This was from lack of use either. I use this bag for 2 years during secondary trips and every plane journey I go on. Surviving secondary school in one piece is a miracle all on its own. The material use is very thick and thankfully water proof.
I'm trying to think of one bad word to say about it but I can't. The bag is plenty big enough and larger ones are available. Though the price may sound high, its lasts long enough for it to be worth it. They come in many different colours, patterns, sizes for many different uses whether its social meetings, work or school. Eastpak, for me, is the best backpack I have ever owned.
I first came across Eastpak several years ago when out shopping for a new school bag for my son. I was with a French friend who is a very savvy shopper and she told me it was an Eastpak bag that I should buy! When I saw the high price tag I had second thoughts! However she assured me Eastpak bags would far outlast any of the cheaper brands making them very cost effective!
The Eastpak bag I eventually opted for was a 24 litre sized bag known as a Pak'r. It is available in several colours including black, pink, camouflage fabric and a few other patterned options. I opted for a black bag as I knew my son wouldn't want anything too fussy. I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but see this bag is still available from Amazon for £35.00. The bag looks fairly basic and measures 41.5 x 29.5 x 16.5 cm. It is made of strong waterproof fabric and has reinforced covered zips. There is one main compartment and another separate smaller compartment on the front of the bag. The bag has the Eastpak badge logo switched onto the front.
The back panel is well padded and the straps are also well padded and adjustable. The straps are designed to be non slip and the bag can be worn low on the body .The backpack is very light weighing just 395 grams before it is filled.
Like most teenagers my son is not exactly careful with his possessions! His bag is usually thrown down when he comes home from school in readiness for the nightly fridge raid! He has been using this bag on a daily basis since I bought it about 4 years ago. The material shows no signs of wear and the zips (usually the weakest point) are still in good working order. It has been carried full of books to school in all weathers and the books have remained dry.
My son says the bag is very comfortable to carry and is a bit like a tardis, as it can fit far more in that you would think! The bag is easy to keep clean and only requires a quick wipe to remove any mud. However as we have the black version it doesn't show the dirt! The bag has a top grab handle should you wish to lift it from standing. I once borrowed this rucksack to take as a flight bag and also found it very comfortable to wear.
Eastpak rucksacks are available from several web sites and it is always worth price checking to get the best deal. Eastpak offer a 30 year warranty on their products but as I haven't had to claim I can't comment on how they honour this promise.
Eastpak are responsible for making probably the best rucksacks in the world. The vast majority of my school friends had them and we got the bug from some french exchange kids.
The amzing thing about these rucksacks are that they just keep on going. Mine has been through a million things from rock climbing to school book carrying. The materials seem to be holding up well. The zips all still work and the strap system is as good as new.
The padding on the straps is great and no matter how heavy the load in the bag is they always seem to transfer it to my shoulders without causing cutting into the shoulders.
One bad point is that after 6 years the colour of the fabric has faded but when you consider how many times it has been in the rain then i'm not surprised. Also the bag is not waterproof so if it rains heavily the stuff inside will get wet.
One main compartment with front pocket.
