Advantages: Tasty hot toasted sandwiches
Disadvantages: Only makes two at a time
This sandwich toaster is a little bit more stylish than the average White look models that have been coming and going in my kitchen as I grew up. We have this particular model around three years now and it cost only £10 in Asda. This sandwich toaster is actually made under the Asda name and has a surprisingly good quality feel to it.
Appearance wise it's mostly black but does have a cool stainless steel strip swishing across it's top. This little design feature makes this toaster look far more expensive than it was and blends in perfectly with our more expensive kitchen appliances. Our kitchen design and decor has change since we got this sandwich toaster yet it still looks good even though the kitchen we bought it to use it in has changed drastically.
Unlike our previous sandwich toaster this has no on off switch. In order to turn it on I have to just plug it in and to switch it off i have to either plug it out of the plug socket completely or switch it off at the plug.
Along with the silver strip on top of the toaster there are two small, bright lights. When switched on / plugged in the orange light illuminates. The other light which is red illuminates when the interior hot plates have reached the optimum temperature and are ready to use. The fact that the body of the unit is black makes the lights even easier to see. The body of this toaster stays nice and cool to the touch while heating and even toasting as some toasters can become incredibly hot during operation. The curved black handles also stay nice and cool making it very easy and comfortable to open once my delicious hot toasted sandwich is ready to eat. The cord isn't overly long but this in my opinion is a good thing as with hot appliances like this a long cord can be dangerous. It measures around 80cm, more than enough as this is the kind of appliance that sits in one place on my counter top.
The interior hot plates are non stick but the do recommend that you give them a slight coating of butter to grease them before heating. There are two hot plates one on top and one on the bottom of the unit to ensure both sides are toasted evenly. I simply use a piece of kitchen roll and give it a quick, light, rub over with butter. They also recommend that you not only butter the inside of your bread like you would normally do but also lightly butter the out side of your bread as well. The reason for this is to ensure a nice, crisp, even, golden toasted result. This is a duble sandwich toaster meaning that you can make two toasted sandwiches using four slices of bread filled with your filling of choice. This is supposed to seal and cut your sandwich, it seals it shut and does a great job at keeping the molten cheese and other stuff locked inside. But it doesn't cut it for you, it makes an indentation that you can then snap or cut in half once the sandwich has been removed from the toaster. This no big deal and wouldn't put me off recommending this machine.
Cleaning is very, very easy. Even if the worst happens and some cheese does happen to spill out on to the hop plates. I just leave it to cool slightly and wipe it off using a dampened piece of kitchen roll. The exterior can be washed by simply wiping down with a damp cloth.
Very few things are as tasty as a toasted sandwich. Late at night when hunger hits this simple appliance can be a life saver and depending on what's in the fridge the results can only be described in one word scrumdiddlyumptious!
