Breville Sandwich Toaster:
I had never used or had a sandwich from a sandwich toaster until I moved in with my other half and they have one so now I use one fairly often.
Basically the Sandwich toaster is a device that is used to make toasted sandwiches.
This Sandwich toaster is well made, to get this working you slap in the 2 plates, these plates are basically metal blocks that you place the bread on, these plates go into the grey stand. The grey stand is not that great to look at and the overall size of the sandwich toaster is just over the size of 2 slices of bread, these 2 attributes combined means that we hide this away in the cupboard when not in use. In order to get this to work you have to clip down the toaster at the front to ensure there is pressure on both the front and back of the sandwich to heat evenly.
Using the Sandwich Toaster:
The Sandwich toaster is really easy to use, set up as I already said above and then get your 2 slices of bread (or 4 if making 2 sandwiches, which I recommend as they are very nice)stick some margarine on the outside (personally I like Flora Light and make sure you put it on the OUTSIDE) and put in your filling. Once you have everything sorted you need to turn on the sandwich toaster, this is simply a case of putting the plug in the socket and switching it on (this is very important or as I did once you will be waiting a very long time for it to heat up). Once the power is on a little temperature light comes on at the back of the device, this is a useful way to make sure you have turned it on, this light will initially be amber and once it is up to temperature the light turns green for go.
Now comes the good bit, put in your sandwich and clip the lid down, here comes what is in my opinion one of the negatives of this product, putting the clip down can be really hard, this has led me on one occasion to try to push down on the lid to close it, the lid was very very hot and this kind of hurt my hand. I think it would be good if they had some way of trying to keep the lid temperature down so that you can push down on this, that or they should just make it so that the clip closes much easier.
When you put your bread in the temperature will decrease so the light will go back to amber so you know your Sandwich is done when the light turns back to green, now this isn't always true but tends to be the case unless you are using frozen bread, the sandwich toaster does do a good job with frozen bread but you need to leave it a couple of more minutes to make sure it is cooked through. Take the Sandwich out of the toaster and eat :-) . Handily the Sandwich toaster does have grooves that allow you to cut this in half quite easily.
Now there are lots of different ways that you can use this and use lots of different fillings, I personally have used it for both white and my favourite seeded bread which tastes amazing toasted like this. Filling wise I have had ham, ham and cheese (it is really nice), Strawberry Jam and chocolate spread, all of which taste really good.
Cleaning the Sandwich Toaster:
Once you have eaten your Sandwich you need to get round to the task of cleaning it, this requires you to remove the plates (wait for them to cool down unless you want to burn yourself again) and wash these up as you would normally. Now if it was as simple as this it would be great as these pans are really easy to wash as Jam, Cheese and Chocolate spread come off of this with a simple wipe but it is not this simple. When you are toasting your sandwich you may notice filling, cheese in particular, starting to ooze out of the side and down the back this then dries and is not so easy to remove because it is all attached to the power cable which is not removable meaning that you cannot chuck this in the sink with the rest of it. I would recommend that the dirty base it washed with a wet sponge which normally does the trick but it is really easy to miss some as it gets everywhere and then becomes dried on and ends up stuck on it in the cupboard for a month or so (depending on your usage).
My partner has had this for 3 or 4 years and it still works really well and it originally cost only a little more than the £26.26 that it currently costs on Amazon (Feb 2011).
This is a good product that has made me look stupid on more than one occasion. It does however do the job it is supposed to do, it makes really nice toasted sandwiches. Despite the slight issues with cleaning I still like to use this fairly frequently when I am at home having a sandwich so mainly the weekends. There might be better ones out there but this is the only one I have tried and it seems ok.
Summary: Makes toasted sandwiches but I am sure there are better ones out there
