“ Brand: Sanrio / Type: Sandwich Makers „
I was bought this as a gift, somehow the younger me thought it was a fantastic gift idea to put on my birthday list, and while I'm partially too ashamed to leave it out on the worktop ... I must admit it's a really good appliance!
It's essentially a basic sandwich toaster in pretty packaging, hello kitty's face slapped on the plastic white exterior. Beneath the quirky casing are the non stick metal plates capable of making two rounds at a time. The hinges are surprisingly sturdy, not the flimsy things I expected! My one, tiny gripe, is that the plates can't be removed.
My first challenge was wanting to give it a wipe down before using it, the only way I could manage to do this was with a damp cloth, whereas with previous toasters I have always removed the plates fully and washed in the sink throughly. After this, I was prepared to use it. I waited the set time for the light to come on.
The toasties actually took about six minutes to toast evenly. And I overloaded them with cheese. Another issue with this product is it doesn't have anywhere for the excess filling for those *accidents* to run to ... other than the back by the hinges. And all over the worktop. They cooked beautifully, but I spent my meal concerned about cleaning the appliance AFTER use.
The back of it is incredibly greasy, it's difficult to clean and any burnt on cheese and whatnot is difficult to remove without scratching the plates. I'm yet to find a way to clean it to my satisfaction besides the good old wipe down. But besides being tricky to clean, it's a cute, functional product. And who doesn't secretly want Hello Kitty in their kitchen?
My daughter and I both have a love of all things Hello Kitty . We're quite lucky in Nottingham to have a shop devoted to Hello Kitty, selling all manner of things from pans to slippers - although surprisingly, I picked up this particular item of kitty cuteness from Argos at £12.99 (reduced from it's original price of £34.99).
Really, it's very similar in appearance to most sandwich makers - white on the outside, with a non stick black inner, and two lights on the front. The only real difference between this and other toastie makers is the pink image of Hello Kitty on the front, complete with smart little bow and tidy whiskers, and the words Hello Kitty on the front .
Opening this up, the hinge connecting the base and lid feel sturdy. This little point is actually a big issue for me - I eat toasties a lot (I believe this is my third toastie maker in three years) and the one thing that has led me to replace previous toastie makers in the past has been the hinges being flimsy, on one occasion with the hinge pin actually coming out . Similarly, the clasp on the front of the machine for pressing the base and lid together also feels solid and sturdy .
Inside, the maker is coated in a non stick lining, and can make two rounds of toasties. To use it, you need to plug in the machine, at which point the red light will come on, letting you know your machine is heating up to the right temperature . Then one the machine is at the right temperature, the green light will show instead, at which point you simply butter two slices of bread per toastie, and lay one slice butter side down on the base plate, then layer on a filling of your choice, and add the other slice of bread, this time butter side up, and close the base and lid together using the clasp . Cooking a toastie takes around 5 minutes, depending on how you want it done . The non stick plates ensure your sandwiches do not stick to the machine, and once they are done, simply take them out and enjoy .
Cleaning this machine is a little bit of a pain, since the toasting plates are non removable . I simply clean mine with a little hot water on a cloth, being careful not to wet any wires. I do wish the plates were removable, as I would feel like I was getting a much better clean . The outer of the machine can be carefully wiped with hot soapy water .
Another small niggle with this machine is that some bread is simply too big, resulting in crusts needing to be cut off to make a sandwich . However, I feel this is a common problem with many toastie makers - I've yet to find one that can accommoate the large sliced bread I like to use .
Also, if you overfill the machine, cheese ends up leaking out of the back, all over your worktop. This is itself is not a problem, as it is easily mopped up, but it leaves the hinge at the back of the machine incredibly greasy, and this particular part is hard to clean.
Overall, this machine is fine . It's really just a very standard toastie maker with a pretty bit of decoration, and had I notm had an Argos voucher for some money off, I probably would have just gotten a less expensive but functionally identical machine for a lot less. This item is only really worth owning if, like me and my daughter, you're a Hello Kitty nut. Because I AM a Hello Kitty nut, and because, despite it's difficulty to clean I think it's very cute, I'm giving it four stars .
Toasties are a delicious, hot and diverse treat - perfect for those rainy weekend afternoons or cold winter brunches! There's something about the thought of tucking into a toasted sandwich that fills me with a warmth and comforted feeling - the crispy outer shell, the gooey cheesey innards and the soothing, fulilled feeling once you've had your fill! There are so many different combinations of fillings that can be popped into a toastie to make them suit your purpose - from old faithful plain cheese, to beans and sausage, to a sweet treat of melted chocolate and strawberry. How do you eat yours? The thought of combining my favourite character, and a delicious treat, is something dreams are made of. So when I laid my hands on this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker - my prayers were answered!
My Auntie purchased this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker for me from a local Argos store, and I have not seen it stocked anywhere else. The toastie maker is listed both in the physical Argos catalogue, and on their online website at www.argos.co.uk.
When my Auntie purchased this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker for me as a moving house gift, it carried a price tag of £34.99. This product has now been majorly slashed in price and is being sold for £17.99. That's a whopping saving, and if I didn't already have this toastie maker, I'd have bought it for myself!
This Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker turns the regular toastie maker into a super cute kitchen appliance. The Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker looks the same as any regular sandwich maker, rather square inshape with a built in 'handle' and flip up lid. The sandwich maker is white in colour all over, with a large hot pink hello kitty face on the 'lid' with the words "Hello Kitty" underneath. The 'lid' of the sandwich maker also has a red and green led light built into it. To look at, this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker is really sweet, and would look great in a girly themed kitchen. Unfortunately, mine doesn't really match the yellow/blue tiles of the kitchen in our rented house - but that doesn't stop me from keeping it on the kitchen worktop and admiring it at every opportunity haha!
For long before my time, kitchen users everywhere have been making these delicious comforting snacks with help from their trusty 'Sandwich maker'. Whether you choose to call this product a sandwich maker, toastie maker, or toasted sandwich maker, the outcome reached is all the same! The Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker is made from two seperate sections - one acting as a base and the other as a lid. Both the lid and base alike have matching square sections - one on the left and one on the right. The perimiter of the square sections is slightly raised - these edges press into the bread once the lid is closed to seal the edges of the toastie. Each square section has a raised line through the middle which presses into the bread to seal your toastie into two seperate triangular sections, creating two pockets of hot filling in each toastie. Yummy!
The Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker has two square sections inside it, allowing you to make two seperate toasties at the same time (but you can make a single toastie if needed, no problem). You can purchase four piece toastie makers, but two piece makers are more common, and probably more useful for regular households. I will state that with this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker, it is a good idea to use a regular size loaf which has medium to large slices of bread. This is as standard with most toastie makers - and a regular size loaf will work just fine. I tend to only buy a small loaf that has tiny size slices, and this causes problems as the bread is not tall/wide enough to spill over the raised edges, meaning the edges of my toasties do not seal - disaster! Be sure to measure your slices of bread against your toastie maker before use, to avoid terrible/messy/wasteful disasters when the edges of the bread do not seal.
Making a toastie couldn't be easier with this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker. First, simply plug in and switch on the Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker at the mains. When the sandwich maker is switched on, the red LED light will illuminate. The red LED light lets you know that the sandwich maker is turned on, but not yet at a suitable temperature to use. Once the sandwich maker is up to the correct temprature, the red LED light will go out and the green LED light will illuminate. This is your signal that all systems are ready to go! Butter one side of each piece of bread being used, then lay one slice butter-side down on each side of the toastie maker base. Add whatever filling takes your fancy ontop of the bread, before laying the second slice of bread butter side up ontop of the filling. Lower the lid of the toastie maker to seal the filling between the two layers of bread, and wait for around 3 - 5 minutes (depending on how crispy and golden you like the outside of your toastie!). The longer you wait, the crisper and more golden the toastie will be. Once the toastie has browned to your liking, simply switch off the toastie maker and remove your delicious toasted treats and tuck in!
I was a little dissapointed to find that this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker did not toast on the image of Hello Kitty onto the bread during toastie making - although I think this was probably due to the fact that I was gifted the Hello Kitty Toaster at the same time, and this toasts the ridiculously sweet face of Hello Kitty onto my toast! In my head, this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker would produce delicious toasted sandwiches filled with my chosen comforting filling, and patterend with the cheery, cute and wonderful face of Hello Kitty and her friends. However, unortunately this is not the case, and probably isn't possible..so I really shouldn't get my hopes up in future!
Cleaning the Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker is pretty much a breeze. The outside of the toastie maker can be wiped clean with an antibacterial spray or warm soapy water. Take care not to use too much water, or get water inside the electrical elements of the product, as this can cause some dangerous problems! The inside of the Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker can get pretty grotty at times, ie) when fillings decide to spill out and leak. However, clean up is again pretty easy. Simply switch off the toastie maker after use, and leave to cool down with the lid open. Once fully cooled, remove any dried stray cheese/chocolate/filling before wiping again with an antibacterial cleaning spray or warm, soapy water. To keep safe, I choose to clean my Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker inside and out with a few antibacterial kitchen wipes. This kills bacteria, makes clean up a doddle and avoids putting myself in a water/electricity predicament! I will go as far to state that this product is not made for use in a dishwasher, nor should it be immersed in water, but this should be obvious!
In my opinion I think this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker is great, but that is purely based on a biased 'looks only' point of view. Yes, this sandwich maker is ridiculously cute and fabulous to look at, but it has no special features or quirks that set it aside from a regular sandwich maker when it comes to funtionality. The innards of the sandwich maker are exactly the same as any other 2 piece sandwich maker, meaning that you can get the same quality toasted sandwiches from a much cheaper sandwich maker. This Hello Kitty model is simply a novelty, that Hello Kitty fangirl suckers like me buy in to. I love my sandwich toaster, and couldn't be without it - as toasted cheese sandwiches make a perfectly comforting, warm and delicious treat on a winter day (or any other time I need something comforting and tasty!). However, that said, I could live without this Hello Kitty model, as it is no different from a cheaper alternative, aside from the outside decoration. As stated earlier, the Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker was a bit of a letdown (but only a bit..as I'm a BIG HK fan), as I expected it to toast cute images onto my toasties, or something equally awesome - but alas no! Aside from the creativity of my imagination that never existed, this Hello Kitty Sandwich Maker does its job, and does it well. I don't have any complaints about how well it works, and have had no problems with the product as of yet. All in all, I'd say this is great as a gift for a Hello Kitty fan, but if you're just looking for a decent toasted sandwich maker, then it's worth looking around for a cheaper alternative that will do the same job!
