Tesco Value SMWP10 Sandwich Maker
Advantages: Cheap and does cook well enough to eat
Disadvantages: Not everything cooks that well
I have always gone out and brought expensive sandwich makers or toasty makers as everyone seems to refer to them as and they usually within a year either stop producing top quality sandwich or they end up just not working at all.
I always have a look at what Tesco have in their value range because sometimes there deals are pretty good and you also know if the item is to go faulty you would not have lost too much money.
The item I am reviewing is a £4.64 sandwich maker which is a Tesco value product and the idea behind one of these is that you get a piece of bread and you butter the outside of each slice. Inside you place whatever ingredients you want such as cheese and onion.
You then place one slice on the top half and another on the bottom half and put the lid down and within a few minutes when you open up the lid you have a toasted sandwich with a warm melted cheese and onion filling for you to enjoy.
That was just an example of one of the fillings you could have because this item is cheap and it is not that big either. You put inside your bread so whether you like the crust to remain or not that is optional and for me I leave it on.
The bread goes into a concave hotplate and this has been designed so the bread tilts in the centre so you're able to put a great selection inside and then you place another piece of top and you're ready to go. The light on this machine might not look much with the red and green colour but they help you as well.
When the machine finally powers up which takes around 2 minutes you then get the green light that it is ready and when you shut the lid down again you wait and eventually the smell of your items cooking inside takes over and then a few moments later the light goes off again and you're ready to eat.
The problem with this machine is that although it does produce a hot sandwich not always does it cook the items inside completely. You put in some cheese and at times you have some which is cooked and other bits which are not.
You then have the problems with the overall brown effect. I love toast well done and sadly with this toasted sandwich there is one particular heat it goes to and it never goes any higher than that. If you put the lid down again attempting to make the sandwich go more brown and crusty it does not happen at all.
When comparing this to other brands you usually get a temperature control which allows you to make sure it goes brown but to be honest the sandwich is usually warm just have to make sure you do not put too much inside as a filling otherwise it might not cook that well.
The cleaning process is pretty simple I usually get some hot water which you can get and then you just pour a small amount onto the hot plate and just go around it quickly to be honest the cleaning process is not that bad.
However if you have a piece of the filling on the hot plate and put the lid down and it cooks against the hot plate it can be difficult so that is one problem I have noticed as well.
As for the price it is extremely good and in my view it might not be the best in terms of the cooking ability and for what it offers but it is pretty good. It is light in weight around 1.4kg and it can be easily stored away as well.
Summary: A decent cheap product
