Soupreme Smoked Haddock and Chowder Soup.
As anyone who reads my reviews may know I have a real fondness for soups for my lunch ..... especially at the moment as I am trying to lose a bit of weight. Being at home most of the time too means that I am able to make my own the majority of the time, but there is the odd occasion when the lack of time dictates that I have to resort to having a tinned soup.
On this occasion I have had this Smoked Haddock soup from Aldi. This soup is in the 'Special Recipe Range' but comes in a very uninteresting looking tin with a ring pull lid and a brown label with a blue bowl of soup on the front.
Contents ~
When you first open the tin there is a very strong fishy smell which is greatly enhanced during cooking. The soup is very thick, and a creamy yellow colour with a thick and creamy consistency. Large pieces of potato, peas and sweetcorn can be clearly seen in the soup giving it a very appealing look.
To Heat ~
There are two ways of heating this through, firstly and my favourite way is to gently heat through on the hob, stirring occasionally, being careful not to overheat or boil as this will impair the flavour. Secondly is to heat through in the microwave for 2 minutes for half the tin again stirring occasionally and being careful not to boil.
Taste ~
Well judging by the look of this soup I was expecting it to be a really pleasant experience, however I was disappointed. There is a slight fishy taste though you couldn't pick out any pieces of fish, it is also quite salty, in fact the taste of salt overbears the fish flavour. The pieces of potato are a lovely size and consistency, not too hard or soft, as are the peas and sweetcorn. There is a lot of potato which makes the soup quite filling and certainly makes up for the lack of fish.

Opinion ~
I am a big soup fan and I have tried Aldi's range before and have been very pleased with them. I have to say though that this one is a bit of a disappointment. It is cheap enough for a 'special range' soup compared to other brands at 69p for a 400g tin, but it doesn't give the taste it promises. When you look at the ingredients on the tin it states that it is made up of 8% potato and only 3% fish which makes me wonder why it isn't just sold as potato soup.
The nutritional values are also not good for a soup it is very high in calories and fat for half of the tin and also the salt content is extremely high. Which is not great for anyone trying to lose weight!
It is a soup I will deffinatley not be buying again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but you may think differently!
Cost ~ Available at Aldi only at a cost of 69p for 400g.
Thank you for reading.
Summary: A not so good fish soup ~ 2/5 Dooyoo stars !
