A ready made creamy tomatoey pasta sauce from Asda.

*Before I start, the sauce that I am reviewing (and requested dooyoo to add) doesn't come in a jar like above, but is in a pot, so isn't this exact product*

When I was younger one of my favourite meals used to be spaghetti with Marks and and Spencer's tomato and mascarpone sauce, and I used to ask for it all the time. For one reason or another my Mam stopped buying it a few years ago, and I forgot all about it. That is, of course, until I saw one of my kitchen mates eating pasta with Asda's Tomato and Mascarpone sauce, and memories of that delicious taste from years gone by came flooding back to me. I knew that it wasn't the same as the one that I used to love, but my friend said that it was pretty decent, and so the next time I went to Asda I made sure to look for it and pop a pot into the trolley.

I know it's bad to try something for the first time with good expectations, but as I was cooking it one night I was really hoping for something really special. It is relatively easy to cook: while your pasta is cooking, either heat up the contents of the pot of sauce in a pan on the hob for 4-5 mins, or you can heat it up in the microwave in only 3 ½ minutes, and then mix it into hot cooked pasta and serve. The sauce smelled just like the one that I remember from being little, so I was happy to chuck the whole tub of sauce in with my pasta, as I knew that if it tasted really good then I wouldn't mind having overly saucy spaghetti. I may have overdone it a bit, as after I put my food in a bowl I realised that the amount of sauce in the pot would be enough for two portions of pasta, but I had in no way ruined the meal, so I wasn't too bothered.

Anyway, onto to the taste, which is of course the obvious thing. Its taste is a nice mix of tomatoey and creamy, and you can taste the cheese in there too. In eating it again I remember why I used to like this sauce so much when I was a bairn. Unfortunately, Asda's version just doesn't live up to my memories of Marks and Spencer's equivalent, and so I am a bit disappointed, to be honest. I think that the one I used to have was thicket than Asda's variety, and had more of a strong flavour, which I like. This could, however, suit the tastes of a lot of you, if you like a more subtle sauce on your pasta, though of course that is not to say that this version is watery or tasteless, just that it's not as strong as I would have liked.

Despite my initial disappointment, I did enjoy my meal, and have bought the sauce again. I had it for the second time for my tea tonight, and although it wasn't bad, I don't think that I'll be buying this sauce again. I'd rather go to Marks and Spencer's and spend a little bit more on something that I would properly enjoy, or just opt for another pasta sauce altogether. Still, since a 350ml tub costs £1.28 and feeds two people (or three if you don't like very saucy pasta), it's very good value. I have no idea how much the Marks and Spencer's one is but I reckon it's quite a bit more! At roughly 105 calories per 100g (bizarrely the website only tells us that the energy is 420 KJ, not calories) it's not too fattening either, though the pasta you'll be eating it with is, so don't eat it too often if you're trying to watch your weight. In conclusion, I've decided to give this sauce 3*s, since it's not as good as I was expecting, and although it is nice, I won't be buying it again.
