      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      I love it!

When it comes to food I wouldn't describe myself as a particularly fussy eater. I pretty much am a human dustbin and the only one thing that is really important to me when picking things to make for myself is speed. That's it really to me. Food is food and I eat to live. Sure I like tasty food but I won't cry if it isn't either because I eat when I need to.

I am fond of pasta dishes and of smallish portions little and often so on a recent shopping trip I was browsing at quick and easy meals and I saw this and decided to give a go. Simple as that really it was cheap and when I checked out how to prepare and cook it I was confident I couldn't really go wrong with it lol.

      The Packaging....

The review photograph on the top of this page is the correct product but I am informed (by a shop assistant in Asda cos I asked lol) that they have recently changed the packaging to what I have in front of me now. It's 110g oblong white and green paper sachet that is silver foil on the inside. In black, green and white writing I'm told that it is Asda 'Smart Price' Chicken & Mushroom Pasta & Sauce 'Pasta Tubes In a Chicken And Mushroom Sauce Mix' which is an improved recipe, the size is stated and I'm told that no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fats are within this product and finally there is a photograph of the cooked pasta in a bowl on the front too. On the back of the packet (all in green writing this time) I'm given a list of ingredients and allergy advice, nutritional information and cooking instructions are given, storage instructions and contact details for Asda are listed, the best before date is clearly stamped on and finally there is a bar-code on there. Very simple and obviously economy this is.

      Cooking Instructions....

      To Cook On The Hob...

Place 150ml (1/4 pint) of milk, 300ml (1/2 pint) of water and 15g (1/2 oz) of butter or margarine in a saucepan. Bring to the boil. Stir in contents of sachet. Simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring frequently.

      To Microwave....

Empty the contents of the sachet into a large 3-4 pint microwavable bowl. Add 150ml (1/4 pint) of milk, 300ml (1/2 pint) of boiling water and 15g (1/2 oz of butter or margarine. Stir, cover and vent. Cook on full power for 12 minutes (750W). Stirring halfway through cooking time. Remove from oven, stir again, cover and leave to stand for 3 minutes.

Check product is piping hot before serving.
      Do not re-heat.

      My Experience Cooking It....

Well I have had other offerings from Asda Smart Price pasta & sauces before and have cooked them on the hob or in the microwave and I can tell you there really is no difference to the taste at all so it's up to you how you cook it!

Personally I follow the instructions and I use a very large microwavable dish. Opening the sachet of this is easy cos you just simply tear it and your met with a lot of tiny golden, ridged pasta tubes with a good helping of yellowish powder that has a faint aroma of chicken to it. It all blends well with water, milk and butter and 12 minutes cooks it as well as it's ever going to cook. There is a salty, fake chicken aroma and when you first pull it out of the microwave when cooked and the top of the pasta dish is slightly congealed and yellowish.

Once you mix it up with a fork or spoon the mixture becomes more sloppy though the dish isn't soaking wet with sloppy, runny sauce or anything. You can see the pasta poking through the sauce and looking slightly glossy and bits of what appears to look like mushrooms and tiny bits of chicken but the dish looks ok overall.

Taste wise for me I quite like it. I find the pasta is al dente. I'm sure some people would feel that the pasta used in this is a cheap pasta though. No matter how long you cook it for it never completely softens up. The sauce isn't that creamy but does taste a little of chicken, a little of mushroom and is highly seasoned (alot of salt is added according to my taste-buds).

      Overall....

Cheap, quick, unfussy to prepare and very filling. It tastes great to me, I really like it but I know that the majority of people would find this far too salty and quite bland. Worth a buy at only 28p a packet anyway!
