Asda White Sauce
Advantages: Cheap, easy to make up
Disadvantages: None really
Occasionally I love to whip up a lasagna for me and my bestmate/flatmate. For this I need a whole bunch of ingredients but one of things I do need for between layers pasta and mince and all that is some white sauce so the other day I decided to get this one as it only cost 33p a sachet or any 4 sachets from the range was a pound so I actually got a few different ones to try out!
The sachet is made of paper on the outside and is silver foil on the inside with a photograph of a lasagna on the front of it and we are told that it is Asda Instant White Sauce Mix and that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat and that it is suitable for Vegetarians. On the back of the sachet other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice, we are told how to prepare it, a full nutritional chart is stated, the weight of the powder is given (which is 52g) and contact details for Asda are listed. Its a tear open sachet and all in all it doesn't look as cheap as what it costs and is of course as informative as it needs to be!
All you do with this fine white powder you get in abundance is to blend it with 280ml of boiling water and then to whisk it into an off white coloured smooth sauce that has no smell to it really. I find it only takes a couple of minutes by hand to make an unlumpy yet runny enough to use sauce and thats it.
Taste wise, well any white sauce shouldn't really taste all that much and this doesn't it just adds a moistness to foods and isn't runny. I can detect a slight hint of onion flavouring to it however when mixed with all the other things I use to make up a lasagna I can't taste anything at all!
Its a necessity to use white sauce in the dish I make up and its decent quality and easy to use and for me no different in taste and/or quality than any far more expensive brands such as Coleman's and so for that reason I shall continue to purchase this time and time again in the future I'm sure!
