Advantages: Low fat, cheap, can be used in lots of ways
Disadvantages: Bottle can get a bit messy
I bought two of these dessert sauces last week for quite a bizarre reason - I'm watching my weight! Then why, you might ask, am I buying something chocolatey and unnecessary! Well, several of the range are actually surprisingly low in fat and calories, because they use reduced-fat cocoa powder. I should point out that some varieties, especially those which set to hard chocolate over your ice cream, are VERY fatty, so you should read the bottle before buying if you're at all interested in your waistline. I find that when dieting nothing hits the spot like a bowl of Ben and Jerry's frozen yoghurt with strawberries and chocolate sauce! I know, I should seriously bring out a diet book.
Anyway, as these were on two for Ł1 at Asda, it seemed silly to buy just one at 88p. I therefore dutifully chose strawberry and double chocolate. Both of these flavours have only 0.1g fat and 300 calories per 100g...which as it's a third of a bottle means each, considerably smaller, serving is pretty sin-free! They are also free from any artificial nasties such as flavourings and preservatives.
Each sauce comes in a squeezy bottle but, as they are quite a thick consistency, they can be quite hard to squeeze. I also find that it gets a bit messy and sticky around the nozzle after a few uses.
I've found lots of uses for these other than the tried and tested ice cream topping. They were on display in Asda in conjunction with pancake day offers, and I often like to eat pancakes (the thicker kind you get in America) for breakfast, but do get bored of eating them with jam, so this made a fun change with a bit of fruit. I also tried some on an apple-cinnamon bagel when I ran out of low-fat spread and it was a bit sticky, but yummy! Another way I've used the chocolate one is to spread a thin layer over reduced-fat peanut butter in a sandwich, and I also like the chocolate one on a mini breadstick or apple slice for a chocolate kick if I get a craving!
Both flavours are very sweet - with the strawberry one perhaps tasting least like what it's supposed to be and more just all-round sweetness. It's still nice though. The double chocolate tastes to me more like a chocolate fudge flavour, delicious!
The sauce is very sticky and despite being thick when it first comes out of the bottle, runs off the ice cream in a bowl and I find often congregates around the side of the bowl which means a bit of tricky washing up at times if like me you are lazy and don't do it immediately after eating!
There are lots of flavours to choose from and I am planning to buy a bottle or two of the toffee which is similarly low fat while there's still an offer on in my local supermarket. I'd recommend these to anyone who likes creating decadent ice cream sundaes, or those of us who are trying to be good but can't help the odd treat.
Summary: A cheap way to jazz up a variety of foods.
