Advantages: It's a nice size tin and easy to heat quickly

Disadvantages: Very salty, and not very chickeny or leeky!

I'm a big fan of cock-a-leekie soup, and with the weather turning cold and finding this on bogof, I thought it was worth a try.

Opening the can, it looked watery, but I decided not to worry yet. It was easy to heat, 4 minutes in my ancient microwave, which makes this style of soup perfect for a work lunch where you're likely to have a more modern microwave.

In appearance it was clear beige, with obvious bits of leek, onion and rice. Rice is not standard in cock-a-leekie, but it adds vitamins and energy, so I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

However, despite the fact that leeks are the second ingredient listed (after water), I could barely taste any leek and no chicken in this soup. If I'd been doing a blind taste test, I would have said this was a french onion soup, as the predominant taste was onion with chicken stock. I would also have been happy to eat it as such.

A few lumps of chicken would be nice, and help to make it taste like a normal cock-a-leekie.

In addition, the soup is very salty, containing both yeast extract and extra salt. If they just didn't add the salt, that would improve the soup immensely.

Summary: A disappointing cock-a-leekie but a not bad soup if you haven't got your hopes up
