Baxters Royal Game
Advantages: Delicious, fairly low in calories and fat, easy to prepare
I usually make my own soup but one tinned soup I love is Baxters Royal Game, especially during these cold winter months as it's a very warming soup which I find especially comforting with a large chunk of French stick.
Baxters first created their Royal Game soup back in 1929 and I for one can see why it's stood the test of time, not least because it's such a simple soup yet tastes luxurious and moreish.
Royal Game soup always puts me in mind of a spicier and richer version of oxtail soup, this is down to the consistency and also the basis of the flavour is very similar in taste.
It's certainly a meaty soup, there are small pieces of potato and carrot in it but it's basically a meat soup for meat eaters, the vegetables are simply there to break it up a bit.
While the vegetables have a softer texture than I'd like, the meat more than makes up for it. It's tiny little chunks of meat made up of venison, pheasant plus venison liver and heart. I know this doesn't sound wonderful but it really is such a tasty blend of meatiness, this is one of those soups which tastes much better than it sounds!
The broth itself is deliciously meaty, there's a hint of mustard and a delicious selection of herbs and spices which gives the soup a real kick. I love to dunk my bread into it and let it soak up the hearty broth, this makes such a satisfying meal of a simple bowl of soup. If you're feeling particularly creative then put some grated cheese on top of slices of French stick, grill until the cheese has melted then float the bread slices on top of your lovely Royal Game soup.
This soup is very filling, I usually have half a can at a time although have been known to eat a full tin if I'm feeling hungry. Considering how substantial this is I was surprised to find this is fairly low in calories and fat, each half tin contains 74 calories and 0.6g of fat which if I remember correctly is better than Heinz's supposedly very healthy Vegetable soup.
