Advantages: Tastes great, really easy to make

Disadvantages: None

It's that time of year when the roasts start becoming a weekly event for us. The cold weather needs to have its ups to combat the miserable downs of dark mornings and dark afternoons, and so we turn to the Sunday Roast.

With a variety of meats on offer in all manner of supermarkets, we often chop and change. Whenever we have chicken, however, we know that, in our cupboard, we have tub of this sitting there waiting for us to put the icing on the cake.

Bisto is a name that carries quality. This gravy is specifically designed to go with chicken rather than other meats, and it really does compliment it very well. There's no chicken in it, if that's what you were thinking might be the case. It just caters the flavour, gives a lighter gravy, whereas their original is darker and fuller in flavour, heavier almost, which compliments red meat perfectly.

This requires just a couple of teaspoons of the granules that are in the tub, and add hot water. They do recommend for extra flavour that you add the juice from the chicken ocne it has pretty much finished roasting, as the gravy is instant and you can make it once everything else is ready. It has a lovely smell to it, almost chickeny in itself even though there is no actual chicken in it. There are flavour enhancers, and these might be what does it. It almost smells a bit like a packet of roast chicken crisps, if you see what I mean.

It's low in calories as well, with a mere 15 being attributed to each 50ml serving. A word of warning for allergy sufferers as it does contain egg, milk, soya and wheat, although it appears no nuts, so I'm safe with this one!

The granules are also good if you're having a chicken casserole for enhancing the flavour. We also use Bisto regualr gravy granules for a beef casserole. It just gives it that extra edge of flavour without breaking the bank at all. It costs about 80p for a 170g tub, and is well worth having in your cupboard, ready for the next roast chicken meal. A perfect accompaniment!
