A great little jar of cooking sauce that tastes authentically chinese!

Recently bought in a BOGOF offer with a jar of Chow Mein sauce, this was the first of the two sauces I tried. And, of the two, it was by far the nicer!

I do not eat a lot of Chinese but it is an occasional treat and we are lucky in that our local takeaway, just around the corner, is one of the best in town! When making my own Chinese, I tend to avoid pre-made sauces as a rule, though they do have their uses ~ often as a base for your own sauce, and have often found other brands of Sweet And Sour especially to be too sweet by far or much too sour unless I do things to them to make them more palatable. Having had some chicken left over from a roast, I had decided to do something different with it for a change rather than make it into soup or pie and so bought this Blue Dragon product. If it had not been BOGOF I would probably not have bought the Chow Mein variety as well.

Upon opening the jar, I was instantly hit by the aroma which actually smelled okay. Could this be one of those rare things? A bought-in ready-made sauce that actually needed no work? I decided to risk it and added it to a wok already loaded with stir-fry vegetables and noodles.

After a couple of minutes simmering, and after adding the chicken, I dished up and the results were favourable. Both my wife and daughter declared it "yummy" and, as a chef myself, was pleasantly surprised. It already came with small julienne of pineapple, carrot and red pepper but definitely needed the extra veg I had added but was as close to a "proper" take-away Chinese as I had ever tasted from a jar! Neither too sweet or too sour, the sauce went perfectly with our meal and was a million times better than the Chinese bag my wife bought from our local supermarket the other day which consisted of a small variety of ready-made Chinese dishes.

Certainly I would buy this again as everything about this product screamed out quality! It was a nice consistency, had a nice taste and didn't need a lot of added preparation and would be ideal for someone who perhaps has not a lot of time to prepare dinner and wants a cheap option. This cost just under £2 for a 425g jar and was worth every penny as it was truly impressive. I have heard since that many of Blue Dragon's sauces can be a bit hit and miss but they have certainly hit the mark with this product!

I honestly do not think you could buy a better ready-made sweet and sour sauce in a jar! And I never thought you would ever hear me say that!
