The first time I saw and taste Branston Relish Tomato & Red Pepper was at a birthday party. It was lovely weather so we could barbeque in the garden. This relish fits the burgers very well so since then we buy it too.
Branston Relish comes in a colourless plastic dispenser. It is available in different flavours: Gherkin Relish, Hot Chilli and Jalapeno Relish, Sweet Chilli and Ginger Relish, Sweet Onion Relish, Sweetcorn and Red Pepper Relish, Tomato, Curry Spices and Hot Peri Peri (African Chakalaka) Relish and the one I am reviewing now, Tomato and Red Pepper.
These relishes were made to make your food more spicy and delicious. We bought almost all the selection available but Tomato and Red Pepper is the most popular. As the dispenser is completely transparent you can see its red colour. There are a few seeds in it but they didn't disturb us. It is a thick sauce which has very characteristic taste. It is sweet then sour and sweet again. You can feel the tomato dominating in the beginning but later you can feel the taste of the pepper as well. It texture is interesting because it is runny a bit but it is close to a jelly as well. Anyway it stayed in the burger and enhanced its lovely taste.
The ingredients of this relish are: Sugar, Onions, Diced Tomatoes in Juice (20%), Malt Vinegar - from Barley (with Colour: Ammonia Caramel), Tomato Paste (5%), Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Dried Red Peppers (1%), Mustard Seeds, Citric Acid, Ground Cayenne, Ground Paprika, Preservative: Potassium Sorbate, Sweetener: Sodium Saccharin.
As you can see it contains both sugar and sweetener, moreover preservative and mustard seeds. Despite the sugar content its energy values (per 100 g) are not so high:
of which sugars: 34.9g
Salt equivalent: 1.2g
This relish was made by Premier Ambient Products (UK) Ltd. (Bridge Road, Long Sutton, Spalding, Lincs, PE1 9EQ). To sum up, I think Branston Relish in Tomato and Red Pepper flavour is a delicious sauce that enhances your meal's flavour. It has sweet and vinegar scent as you open the dispenser
And it tastes sweet and sour at the same time. It has a very nice jelly-like texture. It is available in most of the supermarkets. A dispenser contains 415 g Relish and in Sainsbury's it costs 1.68 pounds. I keep it refrigerated after we open it and as it spicy enough that a little is enough. We stick to it.
I was introduced to these relishes by Branston last year when I went to a BBQ... however the first one I tried was the Sweet Onion flavour... it was when I was in the supermarket looking for this flavour that I found a whole range of them!
These relishes are usually £1.68 from Sainsburys for a 415g bottle although they are often on offer and most recently I've seen them for 2 for £2.00 so needless to say I have stocked up..
This particular relish I use for BBQ's but more often I use in fajitas to replace the salsa.
The relish is in a short stumpy bottle which is slightly curved in the middle, as the picture confirms, and this makes it nice and easy to hold and squirt out the contents. The consistency of the relish is quite thick though and I do find that even though you squirt it out the relish does get stuck around the lid so you always end up wiping it to stop it going congealed.
As for the flavour, after the first fajita I can just about taste it, however after the second fajita I can definitely tell that the mustard seeds and the paprika have kicked in... However if you gave this to me and didn't tell me the flavour I'm not sure that I would guess thats its red pepper and tomato... you can taste the tomatos but for me its the kick that the other ingredients give it that make me go back for more...
In my home we have alot of Bbqs as my Step-dad is a bit of a whizz at them! He's got his pride and joy (a huge BBQ) and nothing is off limits to being cooked on it. However I love burgers in buns with cheese and onions more than anything else I'm offered.....providing we have relish to tip on them! I am a saucy bird and nothing (to me) compares to this particular relish!
415g see through plastic bottle with integrated hand grip to the middle of it for ease of use and at the bottom there is a black plastic flip top lid concealing quite a large hole. On the front there is a black label and on that I'm told it is Crosse & Blackwell Relish Tomato & Red Pepper and there is a photograph at the bottom of it of tomatoes and red peppers. On the back of the bottle another black label resides and on that ingredients, allergy advice and nutritional information are listed, as are contact details for Premier Ambient Products UK being given (the manufacturer of the product), storage instructions and the recycle and Vegan symbol are displayed, the best before date is stamped on and finally there is bar-code on there.
Lovely! A deep orangy colour and of great consistency. It squirts out of the tube easily but it is quite thick and full of the vegetables. So the saucy bit is rather vinegary with a hint of tomato flavour to it. It's well seasoned and glossy looking in it's appearance. It's quite sweet and slightly sticky and packed with chopped onions that have a slightly pickled taste to them and a nice crunch along with a few dried mustard seeds which deliver a slight kick along with a hint of chilli and mustard.
However this is called tomato and red pepper flavoured and is it? Not to me no it isn't! It's the right colour but I can't really detect any red peppers and looking at the ingredient list there is only 1% dried red peppers in it. As for the tomatoes well there's 20% of them and I get a slight taste and can see a few tomato seeds but this isn't rich in that flavour and nothing like tomato sauce lol.
A burger is naked without this stuff! It's a sweet and sour and a relish with bite. If you like onions you should love this. I love the crunchy texture this has along with the stickiness. It's yummy and I adore it!
